Right you are Jim, and, in fact, short films make good money on the foreign market.

Understand that if you want to have the possibility of foreign language distribution, such distributors will expect you to have dialogue (and nothing else) on one track, and everything else (music, Foley, environmental sound, special effects, etc.) on a different track. The second track is known as the M & E (music and effects) track. Having your sound separated this way makes it easy for a distributor to dub your film in a different language. It also has a lot of implications for sound recording while shooting. Generally your sound recordist will attempt to record only dialogue (and later on, some room tone) while shooting. While shooting, as much as possible you avoid recording footsteps, the clink of glasses and silverware while eating, etc. Then those sounds are added in artificially later. If an important sound effect – say a doorbell – were recorded along with the dialogue, then when that dialogue is replaced, that sound effect would disappear from the film. Not good.

I'm not sure that I am the right person to do a class on postproduction audio, but here (next post) is one key idea from a recent piece I wrote. This relates particularly to features.

Would anyone be willing to do a class on post-production audio?

Can't attend because I work on weekends.

On the last audio training, I couldn't find some key pieces of equipment. That's why we didn't practice with boom mics (etc.) in the group. I'd be happy to do another audio training if there's interest. Or maybe you can provide people with this capability. Or we can do both.

I definitely want to learn about audio. Bad audio was the major flaw at times for past endeavors. Looking forward to this event.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
