Impromptu Star Party and LADEE watch

I realize that this is very short notice, and a lot of you will be at Black Forest, but I looked at the weather today and Friday night is supposed to be clear and it is also the night that they are launching the LADEE moon probe from the Wallops Launch Facility in VA. Hopefully we'll be able to catch at least a glimpse of it. I realize there's not much time to RSVP, but I do need to get the license plate list to the park management first thing Friday morning, so please don't forget to include it in your RSVP.

Enjoy the night sky away from the bright lights of the towns and cities in our area! The night will be dark - perfect for star gazing. Bring your own telescopes and binoculars or use those provided by our members.

RSVP is required at least one day beforehand. As a reminder, when you RSVP that you are attending, you will be asked to provide your license plate number. We need this to provide (number only) to the Park management who will then provide it to the State Police and State Park Police. If you are not on the list, you are not supposed to be there as we are there after park hours. If you are there and not on the list and the Police show up, we are not sure what the consequences will be.

Please review our guide to star party etiquette if you have not been to one of our star parties before:

As usual, we will be in the West Beach parking lot at Lake Taghkanic.

Had a lot of fun and met some really nice people. Iridium flare and the launch were right on schedule. Completely clear skies by 11:00 pm.

We had variable cloud cover, on and off, but it was a great star party. Memorable sightings at my scope included: Venus, M31 w/32&110, Saturn, Alcor&Mizar(A&B), M13, M15, M51, M57, Double Cluster in Perseus, M81&82, Dumbbell Nebula, NGC7331, NGC436.

It did turn out to be a pretty good night. And the best part was seeing the launch!! I didn't really expect to be able to see it, but it was pretty cool!!!
