June Star Party

Summer, the nights are short, but the weather can let you stay up until dawn. Sagittarius is now up, the center of our Milky Way, filled with globular clusters and wonderful nebulae. Come join us.

Reminder: all Star Parties require an RSVP on meetup by Thursday at midnight.

Sunset: 8:33 p.m.

End civil twilight: 9:07 p.m.

Moonrise: 3:09 a.m.

Location: Lake Taghkanic State Park

Lake Taghkanic State Park is in the town Ancram, NY, just 10 minutes north of Wilcox Park in Milan. Star Parties at Lake Taghanic are held in the West Parking log, next to the beach. The skies are darker than in Wilcox, with less stray light to deal with. The horizon is also much lower, especially to the south and east, making many more targets possible.

The Observing point at Lake Taghkanic is the main parking lot next to the West Beach. Once you enter the park, at the first big fork, bear right. This will lead you down to the beach parking lot. We will be towards the north end of that, near the main buildings.

IMPORTANT: all events at Lake Taghkanic State Park require an RSVP which includes license plate number of the car you are bringing (please do so via Meetup). The park is patrolled by state police, and all non registered cars will be ticketed and risk our use of the park.

RVSPs close Thursday at midnight before the event (this is true even if event postpones to Saturday because of weather). So RSVP yes early if there is a chance you can make it either Friday or Saturday night.

It was great. The skies cleared up nicely when the sun went down and a great time was had by all.

Had a wonderful time out there with everyone. Got to see lots of objects I'd never hit before, including a lot of the galaxies in virgo, and globs down in scorpius. That southern horizon is just awesome.

Had a great time meeting some of the members, viewing objects through their telescopes.

First time attending on advice from a friend. Nice people and lots of information. We do not have equipment but everyone shared.

This was our first star party. It was a delight to meet so many knowledgable people and so many who had made their own scopes. We brought my 1989 vintage Meade 826 equatorial and was able to do a direct comparison with Sean's 8" Dob f/6 to see if the optics of my vintage Meade matched a contemporary scope. I'm very grateful to all we met and especially to Sean for his generous enthusiasm.

Fun night of observing. There were about 6 newbies there without scopes who came to see what it was all about. It's always great to hear someones' first recation when they see Saturn, M13, M57, etc. for the 1st time through a scope. Don't remeber there names (getting old!) but they were a delightful group.

Dear Rita, I'm sorry not to be able to give you a ride. I live in Woodstock. Girlfriend and telescope in small car. Sorry I can't give a positive response. I wish you well getting a lift. Luca
