The Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival Astronomy Outreach

Members of the Mid-Hudson Astronomical Association will be conducting an Astronomy outreach at the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival.  Meetup members with telescopes are invited to join them.  The list of activities includes solar observation.  Participants and their significant others will receive a full day pass to the festival and be allowed to spend the night camping in the High Meadow or stay in the area designated for RVs if they wish to do so. They will also have plenty of time to enjoy themselves at a well run award winning gathering. The music at Grey Fox is not strictly bluegrass. It tends to be jam centric and has a very broad appeal. There are showers available as well as access to electricity. Thousands of people of all ages from all over the world attend the festival annually. We will be providing hundreds of people with the opportunity to take their first look through a telescope. The dates of the festival are July 19th through the 22nd although not much takes place on the 22nd. The number of passes available is limited. Anyone interested in taking part in this event should contact Paul Granich at [masked]  as soon as possible to get answers to their questions and let him know which days they will be there.  Multiple days aren't a problem.  You can learn more about the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival at http://www.greyfoxbluegrass.com/ws/pages/home.php.

Here's what made the biggest impression on me. Many people spread blankets out on the ground and laid themselves down on them with their children to look up at the stars and the Milky Way. They live in large metropolitan areas and had never seen anything like it before. That's what made the outreach event at Grey Fox such a pleasure to do. I hope everyone enjoyed it and I'd be gratified to be invited back next year.

We had many folks come see us in the High Meadow. They visited our information booth and received cool free stuff, checked out Rick's, Bill's, and Eric's green laser pointer sky tours, and took a squint through our telescopes.

Rick and I were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the night sky at the Walsh Farm. We arrived on Tuesday to set things up in the High Meadow for the outreach. It became apparent to us that night that the sky is quite dark and a delight to observe with a telescope or the unaided eye.

I really enjoyed this outreach event and I'd like to thank everyone who participated. Rick and his grandaughter Alyssa, Judy Guercio, Eric Bram, and Bill Walsh. I also want to thank the crew that did the presentation and musical performance in the Family Stage Tent. Tim Denman and his wife Kath. Bill Buskey and his wife Mary. Terry Seeley and his wife Lynda. Thank you all for your hard work and support. I hope I'm not leaving anyone out.
