Paddle Biscayne Bay, part 2: 79th St Causeway to Bayside

This will be the long delayed (broke a bone in my hand) 2nd part of the series. We will launch at Morningside Park, paddle south to Bayside, back north to the 79th St Causeway and then back to the launch. Estimated distance is 10 miles, but since we launch in the middle you can break off early for a 6 mile jaunt. Highlights of the trip are Bayside, the Venetian causeway and several spoil islands. Trout, bluefish and mackerel have been biting if anyone else wants to troll. Fishing license required. We'll stop for a break on one of the islands. High tide is at 8AM, so the paddle north will be against the current, which is only bad right near Bayside.

Directions to Launch: Take 112/195 Expressway east to exit 2B- Biscayne Blvd. Turn right on Biscayne Blvd (US-1) to NE 50th terr (just after the church). Turn right and meander to the park entrance on NE 55th St. Don't mind the guard at the gate, they just record license plates and let you through. The new launch area is the parking lot just north of the swimming pool. Plan to launch by 9:30.

Skill level 2 due to distance. Bring water, snack, PFD, whistle, hat, sunscreen.

Hello, I’m Cecilia, I’m from Argentina and I live in La Plata ( in Buenos Aires province) I ‘ve been kayaking for a year and I already went to Bariloche ( Argentinean Patagonia) on a three day Kayak tour ( on Nahuel Huapi Lake) I just loved the experience! I often go to Miami , so next time I go there I’d like to kayak the ocean. I assume, there a re place to rent a kayak to go on a kayak tours. Am I right?

Just check weather.com or any other weather forecasting site. If the winds are 12 mph or less you should be OK- depends on your skills.

The kayakers were very friendly. The weather was sunny but not too warm. Thank You for a great adventure.

Really good trip. Highlight was going into Miami Downtown and being so close to the incredibly huge passenger tour ships. Roger did a great job showing us the sights.

    Hi from Denver,
I am looking for recomendations on kayaking locations within a couple of hours of the Miami area where I can rent a kayak on site. My girlfriend will be visiting the area March 10 and 11th. Either ocean or freshwater.
    Thanks!

Doris, you can just paddle to Morningside park to meet us by the dock. We will be paddling up to Bird Island by Pelican Harbor at the end of the trip, so you can head home from there.

Hi! Anyone setting up a meet up at Pelican Harbor on 79th St. I live down the st and I can take off from my house. I have no trailer to drive south to meet you all at Biscayne Park

I put in a query to Miles to see if he can provide rentals. They rent kayaks at Morningside Park, but not reliably and I don't know what the rates are. The total trip should be 4 hours at the most, so we should be done by 1-1:30 PM. Since it is a circular route, we'll be back near the launch before noon if anyone needs to leave early.
