Gables Waterway Paddle (SUP, Kayak or Canoe)

Meander past majestic homes and limestone bluff.  Manatee are not uncommon, nor are Egrets, Ibis, and giant Iguanas.  Fish swim by beneath a canopy of old native Florida trees.  It's the Gables Waterway!

Depending on wind and tides we may head towards the Biltmore or towards Biscayne Bay and Tahiti Beach.  Bring your kayak, canoe or SUP for a wonderful Sunday morning on our very own South Florida Waterways.

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate.  Excellent for first time and experienced paddlers.

Distance: Approx. 5 miles Roundtrip

Time: Approx. 3.0 Hours

Parking: Please drop off your boat and gear and park.  The launch site is small.  A few street spots are available across the street; plenty of parking is available at the metered lot about a block away.  Be sure you do not obstruct traffic please.

Required Gear: Boat or Board, Life Jacket, Paddle, Whistle, paddling appropriate clothing and appropriate footwear (no flip flops)

Recommended Gear: Sunblock, Waterproof Camera, Drinks, Snacks, Bug Spray (just in case)

Rentals: Rentals are available from The Paddle House.  Single Kayak $25, Tandem/Double $35, Paddleboard $30.  Advanced reservations required.  Call The Paddle House at (786)[masked] or stop on by to reserve your boat and pick-up some lights.  We're at 2753 SW 27th Ave. on the corner of SW 27th Ave and 28th Lane, between Shell Lumber and US1.

The fine print:

By participating in any of our paddles you assume all risks and responsibilities for your personal health and safety and for your equipment; as well as the safety and equipment of your guests. It is important for everyone that each participant be prepared for the trip. Please use your discretion and best judgment when joining an outing. Be sure you are up to the paddle -- physically, mentally and that your equipment is appropriate for the intended trip. All night paddles require lights; even for rentals or borrowed boats. PFD and whistles are required. Intermediate to Advanced Paddles are for those who have substantial experience, skill, and solid knowledge of boat handling and self-rescues. Kayaking has inherent risks. Often, we are the smallest boats on the water. We each individually assume these risks each time we go out on the water. With all that being said, we all look forward to yet another great day on the water.

I saw some vehicle parked at the launch under the metro rail...Is it ok to park there or can I expect a ticket for parking there?

    March 29, 2013

    • Esther

Expect the ticket. If you can find the officer on duty they may give you the go ahead. That's what Sharon was able to do that day. Officially, parking there is a no.

Great paddle. I never thought I would have seen more wildlife in an urban paddle than in the backwoods. Upset about the attempt by Biltmore Golf Course to attempt to restrict our freedom of movement on a navigable waterway. We should organize a "paddle-in" complete with hard hats in front to exercise our rights.

We could wear white water helmets to protect us from white water balls. We would have to have two cinematographers to post video on you tube. We need Ellen's pschydelic goggles to identify repressed kayaker's. I think hole seven and six are the water hazard holes that shoot over the waterway. Apparently the only restriction I could find is one against mooring. We could demonstrate our rights to underwater rights with ball retrievers. Each good ball retails for $1-2.

Great relaxing time on the water. So much to see on the Coral Gables waterway. The only thing I did not see was a golf ball fly by....Lots of birds, manatees, fish, nice houses and beautiful coral rock.

A beautiful place to kayak. I saw some birds I had not see before and we saw manatee. I've never kayaked next to a manatee. Thank you Esther it was a fun and relaxing day on the water.

It was an interesting and relaxing paddle in the Coral Gables Waterway, although we had to watch out for flying golfballs when we paddled through the golf course. At one point, a golf course attendant rushed over to us in his golf cart and told us that we were in a "hard hat" area and should turn around. Some of us did and some decided to take their chances. Who knew we would have seen such a variety of wildlife in such an urban setting. The encounter with the manatees was kind of exciting as I tried to avoid paddling over them; I've heard the stories and seen firsthand what can happen to kayakers paddling over manatees!

Hi June, next to the address under Gables Waterway there is a place to click on map. It gives a good description of where it is. I also didn't see the map at first.

    March 16, 2013

    • June

      I still don't see it :(

      March 17, 2013

    • Valerie

At the top of meetup info there's a line that says "Gables Waterway Launch" under that is the address and in parenthesis is (map). Click on it. You will see a picture of a pink house. Parking is across the street under metro rail.

Hello! So I will be renting a kayak from the paddle house and have no vehicle to transport it to the launch site, is there anyway to rendezvous with someone to get to the launch site?

    Thanks!

Esther , i went into the park at granada and bird ,west corner . i had seen it but never into it . there is ample parking and picnic tables and a sort of enclosed dock from where you cannot launch . but to the sides there is some space to launch but tricky. if you have not seen it when you get a chance go take a look at it .they have also built a walking bridge next to bird road . thums down ,i think.

    March 13, 2013

    • Esther

Darn. Good thought though. Maybe this for a private launch

      March 13, 2013

Robert, I just called them & they said that if you rent from them they will drop it off at the launch site for you.

will see you then .i live on the waterway about one block from the launch site.i have not been getting the e-mails since late feb. and just checked the site and found this .
by the way esther there is what i think may be an easier unloading and parking zone. the new park launch ramp at bird road and granada right behind the girls scout former meet place/house.i will go in there today and check it out and will re post later on the day.

    March 12, 2013

  • June

I joined the waiting list, hopefully we know with enough notice to rent a boat or two.

    March 12, 2013

  • Esther

Okay! I added in several folks. I think I got everyone so far. The problem with the launch site is its size (it's a small staging area). You must drop off quickly and leave so as not to block the road. If you can't make it, don't worry. We will do it again soon.

    March 11, 2013

  • John D.

Joining the waiting list, hoping for a spot.
