FREE Mother's Day Brunch Biscayne Bay Clean-Up and XF500 Presentation

This weekend, The Paddle House and Miami Kayak Club are hosting the Expedition Florida 500 (XF500) team as they make their way through Miami. In support of their stewardship efforts we have scheduled two events this weekend. Please join us on Saturday, May 11th, at Curtis Park and E.G. Sewell Park for a Miami River clean-up and welcome reception; and/or Sunday, May 12th, for a clean-up of Biscayne Bay from Shake-A-Leg Miami in Coconut Grove with FREE Mother's Day Brunch for event participants, compliments of WNF Law, P.L.

We are also excited and proud to announce that late last week; the City of Miami approved our request to declare the Saturday before Mother’s Day, Mother Ocean Day. The Honorable Tomas Regalado, Mayor of Miami, will be onsite at E.G. Sewell Park this Saturday for the proclamation. Justin Riney of Mother Ocean and lead of XF500 will have a presentation on the team's exploration so far and to follow.

Castaways Against Cancer will be onsite; they are raffling a Kayak and Paddle as a fundraiser for their annual paddle from Miami to Key West raising awareness and funds for cancer research. Raffle tickets will be available at both events.

Mother Ocean Day 2013 is the first annual event in observance of which individual members of the community are encouraged to gather to take action in the spirit of volunteerism, cooperation, to engender stewardship of our oceans and waterways; highlighting the impact each singular act of service can effect on the World around. Please join us, by land or by sea, as we highlight the wonderful waters we are so fortunate to enjoy and the wonderful people who by giving just a small amount of time have such a tremendous positive influence in our community. Be a part of the change that makes our World, our waters, a better place now and for generations to follow. Let Mother’s Day Weekend become the time of year we honor all our mothers, Mother Ocean, Mother Earth and our very own Moms.

Organizations participating in the clean-up are encouraged to bring banners and informational materials. Please let us know you are coming, we would like to honor you as well. Contact Esther Alonso-Luft at [masked].

XF500, a project of the Mother Ocean, is a modern-day exploration of Florida’s coastline, waterways, and aquatic ecosystem as seen through the eyes of the team and the team leader and founder, Justin Riney. 2013 is Florida’s 500th anniversary since Ponce de Leon landed on Florida's coast in 1513; in celebration of this momentous occasion, the team embarked on a yearlong journey combining the best of exploration, adventure, stewardship, science, and sport. The expedition’s primary goal is to highlight the importance of stewardship efforts as they relate to the ocean, coastlines, waterways, and the marine ecosystem. Florida is unique in that it embodies the entire aquatic ecosystem from source to sea – one of the few places on Earth with such a vast array of thriving wildlife and a natural environment based around water.

Help us make our waters a little better this weekend by giving just a few hours of your time this Saturday or Sunday, or both. Share with all your friends and ask them to sign-up so we have a count. They can also register by e-mailing me at [masked]. Rentals must be reserved in advance, call The Paddle House 786.307.3816.

It was a good day working alongside like-minded friends to make our little corner of the world a better place. Thanks to everyone who took part. Thanks Esther and Wayne, for all you do for paddling in Miami. I just wish we could have paddled a bit more because it was such a beautiful day. Good luck to Justin Riney as he continues on his journey. May the ocean gods smile kindly upon you!

Very good meetup and turnout for the clean-up. Not only found out how much trash gets washed up, but, besides the ubiquitous plastic bottles, an incredible assortment. A television?? Excellent brunch, thanks to Esther & Wayne
