Memorial Day Campout at Short Key

We may be crazy but why not?  The bugs have been manageable, really.  The weather has been lovely!  And we have not camped nearly enough.  So come out and stay the night this Memorial Day Weekend.

Launch:  From South-Dade Marina

Parking:  Fee TBA.

Carpooling is recommended.  Plan to stop at Alabama Jacks on the way home for a meal and some icy cold drinks.

Paddle to Short Key, set-up camp and enjoy the evening.

Rentals: Singles (kayaks and SUPs) are $50. Doubles are $65.  Call The Paddle House 786.307.3816.

Need dry-bags or lights?  We have them too and at great prices.  Call or stop by.  The Paddle House, 2753 SW 27th Ave., Miami (Corner of SW 27th Ave. & 28th Lane).  Ph. 786.307.3816.

Sailing? For those wishing to sail instead, and sleep aboard a sailboat there are 7 spaces available. Boats will be anchored away from any possible bugs.  No tent is required.  But you must bring your own bedding .

Transportation to and from the beach will be available.   Fee is $50 per person and will include dinner.  Contact Miles at[masked]

Nice paddle to a Fantastic Overnighter, where we learned of a new sporting event called "Bumper Kayaks", as we made our way through a forest of small mangroves, twisting and turning, I heard someone yell "This boat has no breaks!" Lots of laughter and we looked like the small yellow rubber duckies on the children's water game at the Youth Fair. Hilarious!
We had sunny weather, great Camping Buddies, on a comfirtable island, with a sexy breeze.
It's always a great event when you get good people, food, wine, the ocean, and a FIRE!
Thanks to tireless leaders like Esther, Wayne, Jill, and Porscha, sighhh; Hope I spelled it right, Rest you folks deserve it . . . Eddie

Wow! We had a lot going on. The island is great but in need of serious TLC. Motor Boaters turn this into a party island, which is cool, it's a public place. It would be nice if they took their trash with them! There is no trash pick-up on remote islands people. Get a clue. Your bring it you take it. Add lovely neighbors with 4' speakers & Godzilla singing karaoke. Who would have thunk it! Yikes!

We found a great campfire site where we had our own sing-a-long, mostly the chorus to a myriad of songs, shared lots of wine, great company and great stories. You can always find a way to enjoy a weekend when you're in good company. The water was awesome, wind kept the bugs away, temperature was amazing; 72 in late May. Amazing!

Thanks Eddie, Ed, Jill, Portia, Luis, Marilyn, Jonathan, Tania, Amy, Jose, Doug, Mike, Andres, Miranda, Molly, Nico, Maryann, Thurston, Lovey, Professor, Gilligan and Skipper too (Miles), & of course Wayne:) Alabama Jacks was a great wrap-up the weekend. Thanks all!

Thank you all for the fun, and for helping us "newbees" with our new gear (tent and all). If it weren't for your help we would have blown away last night. Thank you again, and now it's jacuzzi time....

And where exactly do we park? I just looked at it on satellite too, and it looks like a very informal lot (that I'm sure tomorrow will be full of cars). Someone mentioned paying for parking. Do you know what this means?

      May 25, 2013

    • Donna J.

You will park at the marina. It's pretty informal but they do have employees on site who will help you with where to park. We normally pay a $5 launch fee which includes parking; I don't think it will be much more than that, if at all, for overnight.

Is ok if we only come for the trip and not the camping?

    May 25, 2013

  • Amy A.

I want to go and bring my own kayak (2 ppl, 2 kayaks, both new members of this group). Where do we park? Also we've never done this before- where are we camping?

    May 25, 2013

    • Luis y M.

Hello Amy, we r newbs too at this n have not done it before. I believe you park your car at the marina, likely you pay a usage/parking fee. The place we camping looks like a little key of sand a few clicks east of the marina. I recommend you call Miles, he is very good with all this.

Besides camping at this key, is there any other activity that can be done here, snorkeling, fishing, bonfire, etc ??? Do we share any food, cooking and if so what ??
Also, and I know this may sound like a stupid question but any recommendation as to what essential gear to carry ??? Given that we have never done camping from a kayak accessed location.
    Sorry for so many questions..

I must apologize. Usually, I post a lot of camping info. A few years back I assembled a resource guide with some of the best information I was a ble to locate. Take a look http://files.meetup.c...

Sounds like a great get-a-way! I'm 3 miles west of the zoo if anyone is SOUTH and wants to Carpool, I have room for an additional YAK and Equipment in My Mistery Machine . . .

There is good fishing in the area. Bring your gear. Rod & Reel or even yo-yo's work. I favor Gulp Shrimp. They are hard, fish love them and they last. Not a substitute for live or fresh killed shrimp but it sure works, and well. May be we can catch some dinner to cook over the campfire.

I suggest we each bring some wood. With all the rain the existing downed wood will likely still be wet.

Yes there is snorkeling fishing, bonfire ect. There is a volleyball net in the water if you want to bring a ball. There are other areas near to explore. You would even paddle to the card sound bridge and go to panama Jacks for a meal. Remember that will probably be a lot of power boaters and jet skis, along with all the music and other things power boaters do. I was there last sunday at least 15 power boats. One guy even had a tent in the water, over his boat. But most of them go home before dark

I most likely won't be camping but I'm thinking to paddle over to Short Key on the Monday and paddle back with the group. Esther, what time do you think you'll be leaving Short Key on Monday?
