5th Annual Independence Day Fireworks, Party and Paddle

Independence Day is here again.  Join us on the water for an afternoon paddle, raft-up at the spoil islands, share some wine and food and watch the fireworks from the water.

This year's paddle will feature a special Good Luck Balloon launch.  Write your wish on the balloon, light it and send it off to the sky.  Stop by the The Paddle House for your Flying Sky Lantern, only $4 each, or order one with your rental and we will have it for your at the event.

This year we also benefiting Shake-A-Leg.  They have been fantastic in allowing inexpensive access and support our clean-ups and events with boats and gear; lending their facilities for talks and walks, and it's time to do a little extra and say thank you.  If you would like to make a donation, please bring a check or cash payable to Shake-A-Leg Miami.  Suggested donation is $20 per person.

We had such a nice time and a wonderful vantage point last year that we are repeating the event. Come to the Grove and enjoy fireworks on the water. It will take a while to launch all the boats so this year we're meeting at 5:00 PM for a 6:00 PM launch.

Trip Description: A leisurely paddle towards Vizcaya (weather permitting) will give us at a fantastic vantage point to enjoy the fireworks. Depending on conditions, if the weather is windy we can also paddle to the Barnacle House and around the Dinner Key spoil islands.  A stop at a beach and you can swim, eat, drink (responsibly) and be merry.

Launch Site: Shake-A-Lake Miami, 2620 South Bayshore Drive, Coconut Grove/Miami, FL

Rentals: If you need a boat or a paddleboard, RSVP AND contact The Paddle House.  We will sell-out.  All rentals must be prepaid in order to guarantee a reservation.  To reserve by your boat or board contact:

By Phone:  [masked]
By E-Mail: [masked] (we will send you an invoice)
In-Person: The Paddle House, 2753 SW 27th Avenue (Corner of SW 27th Ave. & 28th Lane)

Rental Rates: Single Kayak  $40  --  Double/Tandem Kayak $55
Triple Kayak  $75  --  Paddleboard $40

Rentals Include your paddle, whistle and PFD.  Lights are required. Lights are NOT included with your rental.  Bring your own or you can buy one at The Paddle House (ask about our http://images.gizmag.com/hero/luci.JPGLuci Lights -- Solar Powered waterproof LED Lantern -- rechargeable solar lantern, no batteries ever -- only $15 each or 2 x $26. I LOVE these lights.

Launch Fee: Bringing your own boat?  No problem. The launch fee for this event is $10 per boat with proceeds going to Shake-A-Leg. (Rentals do not have a launch fee)

In the event of adverse weather, we will cancel the event and provide a refund within 24-hours.  You may cancel without penalty up to 24-hours in advance.  Questions? Please call The Paddle House[masked]

Parking: Some parking will be available at Shake-A-Leg but it is a holiday weekend, so no promises.  Pull a ticket, drop off your boat and gear and park.  Your parking ticket will be validated so there is no fee.  Come early and you can park in the spaces available in the parking lot.

You may also park at the old Convention Center from which a short walk brings you to the launch site.  Parking there is free, just stay clear of the reserved spots or you will be towed.  It's about a block away behind the convention center, next to Miami City Hall.  DO NOT PARK IN THE MARINA TENANT SPOTS. When you drive away from the marina, turn right onto Pan American Drive and follow the parking signs. If traffic is rerouted because of the holiday, just follow the signs.

Meetup Time: We will meet 5:00 pm, unload the boats and be in the water by 6:00 pm. Give yourselves plenty of time. It is a holiday and the grove will be busy. Don't leave your boat unattended. Wait for someone with the group to be there so that you can park your car. We will try to hold a spot but it all depends on availability.   Do not launch by yourself.  We will make our way out in small groups so as not to block the boat ramps or marinas.
Launch Time: The Goal launch time is 6:00 pm but I'll be happy if we are all on the water by 6:30 pm. Fireworks start at 9:00 pm in the Grove.

Must Haves: Brings lights, whistle and your PFD (which you will wear). Brings snack and lots of beverages, it will be hot. We are all adults, if you drink, please drink responsibly. It is a holiday and the police will be out looking for anything out of the ordinary. Not to mention that you will ruin the evening and be permanently uninvited from any future events.

Don't forget your camera, and bug spray, just in case, line to raft up together, more "refreshments," more snacks, and if you have them, an anchor or stakes. This is a leisurely paddle, under five miles. Hopefully, the weather will hold and we'll have nothing to complain about other than too many boats being out. As always, wear your PFD. Boat traffic will be heavier than usual so use extreme caution.

By participating in any of our paddles you assume all risks and responsibilities for your personal health and safety and for your equipment; as well as the safety and equipment of your guests. It is important for everyone that each participant be prepared for the trip. Please use your discretion and best judgment when joining an outing. Be sure you are up to the paddle -- physically, mentally and that your equipment is appropriate for the intended trip. All night paddles require lights; even for rentals or borrowed boats. PFD and whistles are required.  Intermediate to Advanced Paddles are for those who have substantial experience, skill, and solid knowledge of boat handling and self-rescues. Kayaking has inherent risks. Often, we are the smallest boats on the water. We each individually assume these risks each time we go out on the water.  With all that being said, we all look forward to yet another great day on the water.

Wow what a night what a night. Not only we had the front seats for the fireworks launch but at the end we surf a little bit on the waves of the coming storm.

Ehh, what's a little rain amongst friends?? Oh wait, you're right, a squall. Now everyone can say they paddled in a squall and understand the importance of boat handling. Be glad children - the wind was at our back. Imagine if you had to paddle into the storm? : ) Fun!!

      3 · July 5, 2013

    • Rolando P.

Well after looking at this video http://www.youtube.co... I realized that the storm we had was like a walk in the park. Hey why don't we do some kind of "kayaking surf meet up " some day? It looks like fun

Everyone was awesome. Beautiful afternoon, kicked off Grove Isle, by security, residents were super nice and seemed more amused by us than offended by our presence. The green SALM boat almost sank, cracked hull, time to retire that kayak!! Fireworks were beautiful, water was warm, company friendly, as usual : ) Squall moved in and some of the cats took off. The more followed and we were off. Luckily it was at our back making it a very quick ride in. Next year we may launch from Watson Island.

Had a great time except I misplaced my hat, eye glasses and zip off legs for convertible pants! Anyone find them?

    July 5, 2013

    • Esther

Oh my! Good thing you only lost bottom half of your pants : ) I will ask at Shake-A-Leg to see if anyone found them during day hours. Thanks for all your help.

I'm really happy to hear so many of you had a great time! That's what makes all the hard work worth it for the Miami Kayak Club organizers. You guys definitely earned your seamanship skills stars last night :)
