Red Bull Flugtag in Miami - Human Powered Flight

Red Bull is back in town with human powered flight, at its finest!  We will paddle down the river to Bayfront Park where we can all gather.  Bring something to drink, a cooler if you can carry it.  Kayak, SUP, Canoe, bring it!  Club flag?  Bring it!  Let's all gather and show our colors.  Should be a blast!  Anchors are recommended.

THE PLAN:
Launch with the group or meet up at the front line.  Yes, we usually squeeze past the big boats.

GROUP LAUNCH:
Rickenbacker Causeway Beach.  Meet at beach off the Rickenbacker Causeway, across from Hobie Beach.

DIRECTIONS:  Head towards Key Biscayne, when you pass the toll plaza make your way towards the right lanes. DO NOT GO OVER THE BIG BRIDGE.  Instead, take the lane under the bridge, it makes a u-turn so you head back towards toll plaza.  Stay in the right lane and turn into the beach parking area.  If you miss the entrance, make a U-turn at the parking area before toll booth.  If you miss the turn around, you will have to pay the toll again.

ON YOUR OWN:  Meet at the center front line (on the water).

WHAT TO BRING:
Lots of beverages, waterproof camera, floats or swim things, big straw hats, barrels of sunblock,  line to raft up.  Anchor or stakes if you've got them.  Motor boat repellant : )  They hate it when we squeeze though.  Ha!  Improve your view.

Remember, wear your PFD and/or leg leash as required by the USCG.

For more details, email [masked], or call the shop at 786.307.3816.

CLUB BOATS AND BOARD:  Call in advance to reserve, 786.307.3816.  Singles and SUPS are $30, Doubles kayaks are $45

The fine print:

By participating in any of our paddles you assume all risks and responsibilities for your personal health and safety and for your equipment; as well as the safety and equipment of your guests. It is important for everyone that each participant be prepared for the trip. Please use your discretion and best judgment when joining an outing. Be sure you are up to the paddle -- physically, mentally and that your equipment is appropriate for the intended trip. All night paddles require lights; even for rentals or borrowed boats. PFD and whistles are required. Intermediate to Advanced Paddles are for those who have substantial experience, skill, and solid knowledge of boat handling and self-rescues. Kayaking has inherent risks. Often, we are the smallest boats on the water. We each individually assume these risks each time we go out on the water. With all that being said, we all look forward to yet another great day on the water.

I saw on the news that the injured pilot was Craig Setzer, a weatherman from a Miami TV station.

Great "foating party" style event, and great show. Avoid if you don't like crowds or powerboat raftups.

This sounds fun, but I'm afraid I will fry as I burn really easy. 3 hours on open water sounds like I'm asking for a beatin'.....

Even if you launched with the group, it was tough staying together. Some folks came earlier, some later. As long as you had a good time, it's all good : )

It lived up to the hype. One (I believe) real good flying craft and a lot of enthusiastic people had a great time.

I think at least 6 people that I know of. It's raining now but radar shows clear skies after this system passes over us. Worst case is we launch a little late. Doubt they will start at 2pm anyway. Darned delays!!

If you anticipate peeing in the boat take a bottle with a large mouth.

Hello Ester I suggest as a launching site the first island of the Rickenbacker causeway it is 2.4 miles to bayfront park from there. The parking is free under the pine trees. I dont know the name of the island we called it Los Pinitos

Hi! Since its my first meet up and the first time I'm going far from shore on my paddle board I want to get it right! Where and when are we launching from? Pfd a leash are a most! Also water any other recommendations? Thanks!

Milena, if you were serious about bringing your 3 year old daughter, I would suggest that is probably not a good idea - in a kayak presumably?

Kathy, the event will probably last until about 4:00 or so - paddling would be an add on of course.

Rebecca, a 1:00 P.M. launch should allow plenty of time to get to the event.

I plan to launch at EG Sewell Park early moning around 8. Then paddle west towards Palmer Lake. Then head back out to the bay at noon for Flugtag... should be a nice paddle...See you all there!
