Meetup details changed: Annual Multi-Club Paddler's Picnic at Oleta River State Park

From: Esther
Sent on: Friday, July 27, 2012 1:33 PM

A quick recap of what to expect and when is below.  Please be sure to register when you arrive.  All participants must register. Park at the far lot near the beach.  Unload your boat and park.  We are guests at Oleta just like everyone else at the park.  Please DO NOT block access to the beach or road or we will be deemed unwelcome guest and be asked to leave.  That would be a very bad thing.

We have about 30 people for the BBQ and can accommodate a few more but not everyone.  Please say so now if you plan to register onsite.  Bring cash for your portion of the BBQ.

We have giveaways and raffle items for event participants.  A 50/50 raffle will also take place at the BBQ. Cash only please.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:

Starting at 9:30 am:
Registration and boat drop-off.  You can launch and paddle to the beach or walk your boat over.  Carts are recommended.  Help will be available.
DO NOT BLOCK the road or walkways please.

RENTALS:
Please visit Blue Moon Outfitters for your rentals.  Rentals are on a first-come basis.

Starting at 10:00 am:

Beginner Paddles --  Around the beautiful mangrove tunnels at Oleta depart each half-hour.  This is a relatively easy route that can be self-guided as well.

Intermediate Paddle -- Out to Sandspur Island, Intracoastal and the Oleta River itself.

Paddler's Poker Run - Best hand wins.  Earn cards when you register and for each event you participate in.

Dragon Boating -- Paddle With The Pros, Puff Power Dragon Boat Team

Starting at 10:30 am:
Advanced Paddle
-- Head out Haulover Cut.  Depending on conditions this can be a very technical paddle not to be taken lightly.

Starting at 11:30 am:
Race Around Beer-Can Island

A short dash around Sand Spur (aka Beer Can) Island.  We tried to make it a fair race by making sure our expert paddlers are tired from dashing out Haulover Cut.

Starting at 12:30 am:
Awards, Raffles, Vote for the Best In Show and Lunch
Coast Guard Auxiliary will be out with some boating safety tips and handouts. Nichole Rider from Shake A Leg will be there to talk about the facility in Coconut Grove and how we can all use it.  Get the imaginations working.  We can have some great paddle from the Grove -- Like our July 4th Fireworks Viewing.

Boat Meet -- Bring Your Best Boat, or most enjoyable craft Prizes For: Best In Show (Custom Built Kayak or Canoe, Custom SUP/Paddleboard) Best Decorated (Go all out)
