Shackerstone Festival 2014

CHARITY EVENT - SATURDAY SEPT 6TH AT 08:30 TO SUNDAY SEPT 7TH AT 17:00

This is an outdoor weekend with a difference, and with a full diary, now probably the last weekend break we will be adding to our 2014 calendar.

We will spend some time at the Shackerstone Festival and some time doing other stuff.

There will be a Bonanza of events over the annual Shackerstone Festival Weekend, including the festival on Saturday (and either more of the festival or more likely some chilling out or countryside appreciation on Sunday) and overnight camping on Saturday (and Friday optionally if you prefer to avoid an early start on Saturday)

In previous occasions, we have pitched at the Shackerstone event campsite itself, although this year we are recommending staying at the acclaimed (and budget friendly) Globe Inn at Snarestone which is the next village along the canal towpath

The cost is a mere £5 per night using the pub's facilities, and walking by towpath to the festival. Car sharing can also be arranged from suitable locations, though the journey is really not very far.

The festival has been running since 1995 and usually attracts something around 15000 people. Any profits go to charity, so you will be attedning in a good cause.

There are many performances, stunts and re-enactments  to see, such as: Speeding Chariot, Motorcycle Jumps, Marching Bands, Duck Herding, Sheep Racing, Birds of Prey Display, Motorized Lawn Mower racing, and dozens more.

There are also steam trains and canal boats to be ridden, and a real ale and cider festival to visit (oh yes!) no doubt with some exercise in between for good measure. There are also Dog Training Demonstrations, a Craft Fayre, Fairgroung Rides, and a Steel Band.

Non-stop participation in the festival is not obligatory and we can and will spend time chilling in our tents, walking or going offsite if we please. In fact we have a beautiful local leisurely walk between the GLOBE and the Festival site already planned.

When accepting an invite please also contact Paul Waldron or Simon Tailby so that we discuss arrangements with you. Being a seasoned camper is not essential - we can usually help out with equipment.

You are welcome to arrive Friday lunchtime, Friday evening or very early on Saturday.... it really does not matter. We will conclude late afternoon on Sunday so no holiday annual leave is enforced....

CAMPSITE VENUE

The Globe Inn, 6 Main Street , Snarestone, Leicestershire, DE12 7DB
Tel:[masked] /[masked]

WARNING: Tripadvisor highly rates this venue, in it's quintessential (normally peaceful) rural setting, so don't be alarmed if everyone is enjoying themselves too much!

ARRIVAL TIME - Friday evening to be hosted by Simon if you can (it will be a good night at the GLOBE). Otherwise early Saturday is imperative if you want to join the guided walk to the festival venue. We will not wait for those who have not arrived sorry. But if you arrive later in the day and can find us, no problem.

FESTIVAL VENUE

Venue: Nearest Postcode is CV13 6NB - Barton Lane, Congerstone

Can you go direct to the venue? Well, yes in theory if you are allergic to sleeping outdoors. But this is a group event aimed at those who plan to spend most of the weekend with the group, as we don't wish to spend all our hard earned spare time trying to meet with or keep tabs on renegades who are following their own agendas. This guarantees the rest of us an undisturbed fun and friendly late summer party!

CHARGES

We are charging £6 however this goes towards camping fees, and any banking admin fees and will effectively all be returned to you in kind. We are merely needing to get a fairly accurate idea of numbers/commitment which is not possible when people do not pay anything.  If there is a tornado or monsoon we will not wantonly spend your money!

Hey!! Maria & I will also aim to arrive 08:30, tent up ready to leave at 9am. We'll take games and some chairs and can probably squeeze in one more on our journey (with light luggage) if it helps.

Yes- we can play games on the campsite Sunday. Sounds good. Then we needn't walk back and pay the extra £5 for the two day wristband then. Just get the £10 Saturday one and not the £15 for both days..? If you pay daily on the gate it is £10 per day, so decide on the Saturday entrance what you want to do.

I'm just staying the Sat and going home Sunday, myself. May just stay on campsite a couple of hours Sunday before heading off..

Leigh, et al... Simon is aiming to get to the Festival by 10am on Saturday (3 mile walk), so tents up by 8.30 would be ideal. However this may not be practical for those without a pop-up tent, so we will probably have an early group and a later group walking along the canal towpath from Snarestone to Shackerstone.

    August 28, 2014

    • Simon T.

We aim to be leaving the site around 9am after the 30min tent pitching, and arrive 1015am. We will be really close to the pub on the grassy bit on the left, past the car park.. otherwise[masked]!

      August 31, 2014

  • Simon T.

There is also the option of staying Friday night and play games on the camping field/walk/on-site pub meal then we are guaranteed to be ready to walk the 3 miles along the canal to the event field, which opens 9-10am. It is roughly £10 per day wristband per person or £15 for the Saturday and Sunday. I may just get the Saturday one if driving home the Sunday.
