Advanced Civilization Epic Game Day Event

Fourth slot filled for Epic Game Day is Civilization.

This game is now official! ADVANCED CIVILIZATION is a game of skill for 2 to 8 players. It covers the development of ancient civilizations from the invention of agriculture c. 8000 B.C. to the emergence of Rome around the middle of the third century B.C. Each player leads a nation of peoples over a mapboard of the Eastern Mediterranean and Near East as they attempt to carve a niche for themselves and their culture.

Although battles and territorial strategy are important, this is not a war game because it is not won by battle or conquest. Instead, the object of play is to gain a level of overall advancement involving cultural, economic, and political factors so that such conflicts that do arise are a result of rivalry and land shortage rather than a desire to eliminate other players. Nomad and farmer, warrior and merchant, artisan and citizen all have an essential part to play in the development of civilization. It is the player who most effectively changes emphasis between these various outlooks who will achieve the best balance - and win.

This game has a huge following and is widely regarded as one of the best games about ancient civilizations. Each player takes on the role of leader of an ancient civilization, such as the Illyrians or Babylonians. Your task is to guide your people through the ages by expanding your empire and using its proceeds to finance new technological advances, such as Literacy, Metalworking, or Law. The advancements help your civilization better cope with its problems as well as help bring new advancements.

Please read all of the following before RSVPing. Epic Game Day will feature 3-ish games of epic proportions. All the games being played will be: 1. Long - most will require 4 - 8 hours though some could run even longer. Please be prepared to stay until your game is finished. These games generally will "break" if a player drops out and those that remain will not be happy about someone leaving. 2. Very Involved - These are not casual games or a game one can "just pick up" unless they are experienced gamers. These are not teaching sessions or "Learn the game" sessions. You do not need to know how to play the game you sign up for; someone will be explaining the game, but you should be capable of picking up the game and playing it without constant help with this type of instruction. in short; if you are an experienced gamer you are fine. Each game scheduled will have two requirements that need to be met to actually be run on Epic Game Day - a person to officially run the game and the minimum number of players to play the game. The person running the game will also play the game. Games that do not have the minimum requirement met a week or two before Epic Game Day will be canceled in order to give enough time for those who signed up for the game to sign up for a different game. In this way there will be more games originally scheduled than will be available when Epic Game Day rolls around. Don't be sad if your game gets canceled due to lack of host or player - it is going to happen to a couple games. Better yet, if you are signed up for a game than needs a host or more players go find some people to fill the game up!

I just looked up the rules after reading some reviews of Advanced Civ on BGG and we screwed up something pretty big-- in Advanced Civ, you actually are supposed to resolve calamities *before* buying civilization cards, so that you can't buy Medicine to mitigate the effects of the Epidemic that you just received and so on. The player mats that we were relying on during our turns were from regular Civ, so we got the order reversed. Guess Egypt got an asterisk win there-- maybe we can have a rematch some day?

Ken, Jamey normally sends out a mass e-mail with directions to his garage before every meetup, but in case he didn't, I'll e-mail you a copy from the last one.

I'm sorry to duck out last minute...especially since I'm a new guy who's never played before, but I have some family obligations come up and it looks like I'm going to be going to Minnesota. Sorry about missing this one, I'll catch the next one. Have fun!

We're almost there. 1 more player will make it a great game with the full board, 2 more will make it EPIC! Let's go CIV players!

P.S. If you haven't played before, I've put together a player aide to help you along, and I'll make a quick spin through the rules before we start.
