I thought it was great. Barbara Miner and her husband Bob Peterson are clearly very knowledgeable about the subject, and they were very nice in sharing their insights and experiences with us. Many good questions came up, and I feel that I learned a lot.

When being overwhelmed by big issues like problems in public education, despite so many people's terrific and dedicated efforts and inspiring ideas, I like to remind myself of the message of this book: "Influencer: The Power to Change Anything" (the 2013 re-issue has been re-named "Influencer: The New Science of Leading Change.") My main take away from that book was that most change efforts don't fail because of quality of effort or ideas, but quantity of efforts. I think the authors/researchers said that most people trying to effect change stop at three or four approaches (whether addressing poverty issues or personal things like losing weight), when in reality, it often requires 30 to 40 strategies to make the difference that make the desired change permanent. So...addressing internal and external factors, micro- and macro- factors, etc. then multiplying the ideas.

Good morning everyone. I'm really looking forward to Sunday's discussion & am learning much from "Lessons from the Heartland". I promised Ms. Miner I'd touch base with her soon & want to ask if there are any special requests or direction you'd like me to pass onto Ms. Miner. Plus, I've updated our event description to include some short videos & links on current issues if you're interested.

If you like Duckworth's GRIT premise then read "How children Succeed" by Paul Tough. Great perspective.

Public Square/Cafe Society of the Illinois Humanities Council offers a great model, and lots of ideas, for discussions (based on previously posted readings) of current issues and events:

Depending on date...or is this replacement for June 2?

    May 7, 2013

    • Leo F.

      Yes, that's for June 2.

It looks really intersting, and having a speaker come (Ms. Miner) would be really a bonus. I'll be out of town that weekend, but thanks for all of the links and information. Enjoy the discussion.

I like this idea for future events too--a mix of readings on one topic.

A Vision for Personalized and Connected Learning by Pearson - Pearson's is the education product leader & this is the model discussed as decisions are made. We use the Powerschool Dashboard & were using similar products (Zangle & MyBigCampus) in KUSD. I'd suggest the classroom sizes portrayed here look very different than the ones in your neighborhood...

Very creative idea!! Similar to a college class, where instead of a professor forcing students to get everything from 1 book, they offer online resources that are more timely and relevant. I will go, I just want to add to your resource list as well. Nice job!
