Memorial Day Picnic (Family and Pet Friendly)

As an FYI, I just drove by on Friday evening to see the parking situation.  The repaved road was actually open and people were parked alongside it...not sure what the real situation is, but be prepared on Monday to either park alongside the access road or at one of the parking spots per the figure below!  Cheer!

May 22 Update: The MKE County Parks Dept called me and let me know that while the access road with parking has been repaved as of yesterday, the construction company is not allowing them to open up the road by Monday, which is a real bummer.  As a result, what you see above depicts the following:
- The orange star is our picnic site.
- The parking signs are the best places to park; we'll just have to hoof it over from wherever we park
- If you need to unload things, feel free to get as close as you can to the barrier to unload items like grills or tents (the little crate symbol).

March 6 Update:
I've secured an actual reservation at a picnic grove for Lake Park Area #1.  Attached are the contract (for transparency reasons only), as well as the description and amenities associated with the park.  In addition to reserving the picnic area, the fee included the alcohol permit for our group, which as some of you may know - is a really really really really really sore spot with Andy as it relates to another unnamed Meetup group.  Snarky Snark.

Lake Park Amenities
Picnic Contract
*****

As the name suggests, a picnic to commemorate those who lost their lives serving in the armed forces - a fact not lost on me that it was because of their hard work and perseverance that a naturalized citizen as myself can now be a civil servant of the U.S. as well.

Let's do this fun and right, MKE FUN Style!

I (Andy) will cover the cost of obtaining the alcohol license, and you all bring yourselves, your picnic blankets, your food to share, your drinks to drink, your encased meatz to grill, and anything else that you would find acceptable/favorable to celebrate this shindig!

As the day draw nearer, I'm sure we'll have some type of rough sign up sheet like we did for the holiday party, but I can at least bring my portable gas grill.

Bored of eating, or hanging out with people? Bring your sporting equipment (tennis rackets, frisbees, balls/mitts, bags, etc.)!

Lastly - we don't get to do this often, but this will be a family friendly event, so bring your chirrrruns, and yes - even well behaved pets.

Did anyone happen to find my FitBit One after I left yesterday? It's a little black device, about the size of a USB thumb drive, in a little clip for my pocket. I know I had it at the picnic, but when I got home it was gone. :-(

Have fun tomorrow and have a drink for me!

    1 · May 25, 2014

  • Tom G.

Anyone want to sign up to bring a few bags of ice in a cooler for drinks? I will have ice on the stuff in our cooler but leaking hotdog/brat packages typically make for ... less than savory drink ice. :-)

    May 23, 2014

    • Jenny

I'll bring a cooler and ice!

      1 · May 23, 2014

    • Allison R.

Thanks Jenny! I'm not sure we will have room in the car for a cooler and ice along with the charcoal, grill, and everything else!

      May 24, 2014

  • Allison R.

Hey Andy! If we want to bring something to grill, will we have to bring our own grill? Or should we just bring sandwiches and cold sandwiches?

    May 3, 2014

    • Tom G.

No problemo man. Happy to help out if I can

      1 · May 24, 2014

    • Allison R.

Tom, Fred is going to bring his charcoal grill so we won't need to borrow yours. I'm not sure that we will have room to bring the cooler full of ice though.....I think Jenny said she would bring one, so it should be okay.

      May 24, 2014

  • Emily

    Sorry,
Worried about weather and parking, will catch you all later.

    May 24, 2014

  • W A.

I posted a map of the park area in the description. Notably, the road that leads to the parking lot has been repaved, but the construction company isn't letting the Parks system use it by Monday, which is a real bummer. I've marked where the grove is, where the parking options are, and where you can unload things like grills and tents if necessary.

By the way, there are two different times. One say it starts at 1130, and another 430. Which is it and when does it end?

    May 21, 2014

    • W A.

Hrm. I'm not seeing the 430 start time, but it does start at 1130 in the morning, Diyonna. Of course you all are welcome to come and go as you please.

      May 21, 2014

    • Dustin

Diyonna, it starts at 11:30, and ends at 6, but you can come and go as you choose. I know I'll be there about 11:30, and plan to stay most of the day.

      May 21, 2014

  • W A.

    Hello there!

It looks to be a fairly nice day on Monday with just isolated T-storms and a high of around 80 degrees, so that can be an official goodbye to winter, a brief hello in passing to spring, and right on into summer.

A few notes and pleas as we head into the remainder of the week:
    - If you all would be so kind as to fill in the sign up sheet with the goodies that you intend to bring, that would assist a little bit with planning. You can find the sheet above in the description.
    - I don't mind getting a few extra canisters of the camping propane for portable grills, but if at least one other person could bring a grill (I'll have mine with me) with some propane, that would be much appreciated. Otherwise, we'll be eating cold hot dogs and uncooked meats, which is not so much good eats.
    - Remember to bring a blanket/towel/chair to sit on, for your comfort.
    - If someone could bring a foldup table and/or canopy/tent, that would be swell.

    Thanks, and see you Monday!

      I'll be bringing a fold-up table. I think it's a 5 footer.

Hey Andy... Just curious - with this being a park area, why do we need a max RSVP count? No big deal, just wondering.

    1 · April 5, 2014

    • Jason

Not unless you want to sit in a lawn chair. :)

      May 10, 2014

    • W A.

Ha - Coco, you can bring whatever you'd like to sit on. We may have one or two extra chairs, but no guarantees that they'll be available.

    April 8, 2014

    • W A.

If you RSVP as waitlisted, I'll manually add you. The waitlist after 50 is just to make sure that we don't run into a real overload of people.
