The MiniBar Mantra

MiniBar is a social evening in East London which offers people a chance to snaffle some free beer while discussing p2p, Creative Commons, web applications, social networking and general Web 2.0 (3.0) mayhem & fandango.

Here you can find people who will help you making your next project work. The event is what we call 'useful fun'. Usually there are 200+ of London's - and beyond - finest web entrepreneurs, designers, programmers, tech journalists, bloggers, VC?s, and technology freaks.

What we offer:

- Web-Entrepreneurs can present their start-up and tech ideas
- Presentations will be archived at openbusiness.cc/minibar
- Some start ups will be featured on O'Reilly GMT, the European O'Reilly blog

And of course, Free Drinks, A Lot of Fun and many Useful People

Who you will meet?

From famous digerati and tech investors such as Esther Dyson (angel investor in Flickr and delcious), Mark Shuttleworth (Ubuntu), to tech journalists (Guardian, BBC), bloggers (OpenBusiness etc), Open Source developers (Drupal, Ubuntu), web designers, Creative Commons enthusiasts, web entrepreneurs (last.fm, eCourier, Tioti) to many coders, media artists and other generally useful, interesting and hyper connected people.
Past presentations include: Drupal user group, Esther Dyson, Directionless.info, Magnatune, BookMoch, Tioti, Modfilms, BurnStation, Mix&Mash

Sun Micro have got an excellent program for start-ups needing an IT infrastructure to power their website with heavy discounts. Come chat to me about it if it interests you.

Betavine is looking for a Java Web Developer to join the team. Come find me in the crowd if you're interested!

Who attended?

  • 200 attendees
    •  great presentations and great networking and friendship opportunities.
    •  Honestly, the web startup scene in London is nothing compared to the US
    •  The presentations are (probably) good, but it is difficult to get everyone's attention in a crowded bar, and no-one knows how to use the microphone properly etc. By all means, have an introductory speech, but perhaps it would be better to have official 'demo stations' instead of 'broadcast' presentations. That way people will come over and find out about the startups on display, and it will actually aid the networking as we discuss the products - rather than having to shut up for half-an-hour while we can't really hear anyway! Otherwise, it was all good fun.
    •  Very interesting. Good presenters. Lots to learn about Web 2.0 . Hard to mingle though.Perhaps a Thursday night would suit better so it doesn't cut into the weekend. I think you'd find less people talk during presos if you do this before they are still in the work frame of mind.

Great meetup, very inspiring to meet other people hacking around in the web sphere. The graphywall demo system was pretty cool - like to see more of this in the future. Some of the presentations were a bit poor, but was made up for by the quality of people you start chatting to. Made some good long term contacts.
    •  bad presentations, bad ideas (maybe except for one- the tagging for comments), nothing innovative, nothing inspiring, it wa smuch better the last time I came! but at least they tried...
    •  Interestimg presentations about start ups!
    •  I liked the atmosphere and the presentations were interesting (or at least entertaining). However, when the music started up, it was too loud to actually talk to people (i.e., network). The music should have been a background feature, not a focus.

I liked Mike's moderation. What I would love: can you give away different colors for different groups of people: green=press, blue=investor, red=startup, or for job-seeker and employer etc...
    • Steven Morgan (+1 guest)
Too noisy so you couldn't hear the speakers. The sound system was muffled. The room was long and cluttered so hard to see what was going on. The stage had no lighting so it was hard to see who was speaking. The free bar didn't last very long at all and this wasn't clear beforehand.
