Newbie Night XXIII - Wednesday, March 20th, 6:30 p.m., St. Paul

To the many newcomers, and to those who've been sitting on the sidelines—this is the best way to get started in the MNA Meetup! Please read the description below for important details!

For those who have recently joined the Minnesota Atheists Meetup and for those who have not yet had a chance to meet their fellow nonbelievers, we are pleased to announce (after a long hiatus) the twenty-third in our popular series of Newbie Meetups.

Newbie Nights are specifically designed for those who've never attended an MNA Meetup before or haven't had much opportunity to interact with other MNA Meetup members. It can be intimidating to be the only person in the room who doesn't know anybody else, so here's an event where EVERYONE has come to meet like-minded people they've never met before. Your hosts will let you know what MNA is all about and organize and participate in three small group discussions with plenty of suggestions for conversation topics, so you're guaranteed to meet lots of new and interesting atheists. We've reserved one of the downstairs meeting rooms at the fabulous Java Train Café (The Southern Railway Room, to be precise) until 9:00 p.m. Street parking is available, but you may have to walk a block.

Java Train is located on a side street between the State Fairgrounds and Como Zoo. There's a $25 minimum purchase to reserve the room, but we'll easily cover that by each making a small purchase of a beverage or snack. They also have a full menu, featuring dinners, soups, salads, sandwiches, and desserts (including many flavors of ice cream and one of their specialties, Chef Katie's Whoopie Pies). As of this writing, Wednesdays are $5 one-topping full-size pizza nights. Check out their website for more information:

Past Newbie Nights have filled up fairly quickly, so don't delay your RSVP if you're fairly certain you can make it. We've reserved for 20 and ask that you keep your RSVP updated if your plans change so another Newbie can take your place!

Oh noooooooo! I see I got confirmed to attend tonight at "1:59 p.m.", and I'm just checking my email now (at 7:20 p.m.). So I'm regretfully missing this event. So sorry. Bah humbug. Hopefully, next time I'll get a chance to meet y'all! Have fun!

I started doing other things when I was so far down the list. I can't get over there now. Plus, I didn't nap enough to be able to stay up for this.

Erik, our informal policy is that everyone is entitled to two Newbie Nights. We've had "Not-So-Newbie Nights" as well for people who don't qualify but like the format. Of course anyone is free to set up an alternate time and place for those on the waiting list. If you simply want informal discussion there are many upcoming Meetups that fill that bill and room for more people in most of them. On the home page below "Don't Believe in Gods?" click on the calendar tab to view them all.
(In case you'd like to limit the number of e-mails you get from this Meetup there are lots of options to do that. Just go to your profile (top right menu bar) and pull down to "e-mail and notifications.")
Thanks for all the input and thoughtful responses. Hope to meet you all soon!

I use an app to access Meetup. There is no "homepage below" but, thanks. Guess there are some pretty strict rules and regulations I didn't know about, all the app shows are meetups and there is a hint that a group has members.

Alright. I'll play by the rules this time. I don't want to cause an uproar. I never meant any disrespect to the hard work that has been put in the original event. I just think it's frustrating that those of us that are free have to wait. I'll be good and stop the rebellion for now :P

Very popular group. It'd be good to learn how others define their beliefs or state of being. Am up for an overflow meetup

Yay! I got off the waiting list. Excited to meet everyone. :)

New to meetup. I understand that this specific venue is reserved for 20 but is there a reason that the 14 people on the waiting list don't meet up somewhere else? We could totally have our own newbie night. :) We wouldn't have a plan but we could still all have dinner together and bond over similar beliefs. Just saying...

I saw that, as well - but the nights in the future are also based on numbers. I am a member of the Secular Student Alliance and if there is one thing I have learned from events with the SSA it is that like-minded people that are not dependent on a deity (or deities) are really, really, hard to find. I struggle with really deep depression and I talked to my therpaist last week about how I could no longer attend the DBSA group (Depression and Bi-polar Alliance) because all they did was talk about the healing powers of Jesus. I understand that the planners of this original group have spent a lot of time making this happen. BUT I also think that they would be ignorant to deny other people of connecting together. So we don't believe in god but we believe in a "RSVP" number in order to bond?

Well Jack, I think part of the point here is that, while there will be more "newbie nights" we won't be newbies any longer. Tonight I was grocery shopping and sixteen people took over half the grocery store's deli seating for a meeting. I doubt they had reserved the space. Why can't we just flash mob a place?

There is no reason why those still on the waiting list when the meetup is held on Wednesday can't meet somewhere else. These meetups tend to be informal anyways. Think of it as an overflow meetup. Someone just post a different place to meet.

Hey there :) Did you stumbleupon this page?
Did you just fill in your interests and or finally have the courage to post?

That's me, that is where I am. I don't believe in a "waiting list" - especially when it comes to wanting to feel like you're not alone.

It can be very painful to be secular and there are a lot of people that just need to hear that they are accepted for who they are - that they are not judged based on a god or gods. Imma post it again because I really believe that those that want to get together should get together. [masked]

Work thing came up in Grand Rapids that day. So disappointed, but the bills don't pay themselves. Perhaps next time.
