Day of Reason - May 6, 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., State Capitol Rotunda, St. Paul

  • May 6, 2010 · 12:00 PM
  • Minnesota State Capitol

Minnesota Atheists strongly value the separation of church and state. To remind our government of whom they represent, we make our collective voices heard in the State Capitol while some of our fellow citizens observe the National Day of Prayer outside. Every voice counts. If you can take a long lunch break, or have the free time, we would appreciate making your presence known with us. You'll be hearing from the leadership of Minnesota Atheists, as well as from our members. Prepare to be moved by famous speeches you may have heard before, and listen for original orations on separation and the rights of atheists. This is our fifth annual Day of Reason, and each year our turnout has increased (last year's was over fifty atheists). With your help, we hope to continue that tradition. Our elected representatives take notice, as well as school groups and others visiting the state Capitol, and our presentation ensures that when any media outlet covers the Day of Prayer, our Day of Reason will get equal time.

Come be a part of history and make your voice heard.

I may have just missed them, but I would have liked to have heard more arguments (especially from the Court decision) about the unconstitutionality of the NDP.
I don't feel it should have been a day to promote atheism. It was a day to shame those who think it's a good idea to violate the Establishment Clause.
    Good speakers anyway.

A record turnout! Thanks to all who made it to the Capitol on a weekday afternoon. Momentum is building. Let's keep it up!

I would like to thank each of the speakers and all who were able to attend. The forum of the rotunda is not very good for speakers and listners. But is the center of action for those who make our laws. Our board will consider purchasing an upgrade of the speaker system for next year.

Well, I just may be holding a sign while I am sitting, but I will not otherwise be holding a sign.

Shirley, thank you! That's really good to know - and it also saves the trouble of putting the sign on a stick.
What does everyone think, is this a positive message?

The Capitol has some rules about signs. They must be hand held and no sticks or poles. If people want to make a sign we ask the message be a positive message. If anybody has a Minnesota Atheist tee shirt please wear the shirt.

We will have a full program of speakers from Minnesota Atheists and other atheist and freethought groups in Minnesota. Our program will be a little over one hour long. We will start at noon and go to about 1:15 pm.

I'm surprised by the level of growth I've seen since becoming an organizer, it's given me more confidence in my abilities.
