Memoirs of a Former Ghostbuster - August 22, 1:30 p.m., Roseville Library

Roseville Public Library (map)

Selected By: Jack C.

Join us for an awesome afternoon of testimony from a former diehard ghost hunter and parapsychology undergrad turned skeptic.

Our very own Todd Torkelson spent his late teens and early twenties renting haunted hotel rooms, leading ghost tours, stockpiling ghost documentaries and investigating paranormal claims in his home town of Albuquerque, New Mexico. In preparation for a career as a professional parapsychologist, he considered attending UCLA (where the infamous Entity case was studied), Duke University (where ESP cards were developed) and Yale (where majoring in paranormal studies wasn't unheard of at the time). Todd will cover the "theories" of what ghosts are supposed to be, ghost hunting techniques, the anatomy of an investigation and a rundown of the most prominent researchers in parapsychology today. And, of course, Todd will tell us how he went from being a ghost hunter to a nonbeliever who is an active member of the skeptic community.

Todd Torkelson is from Albuquerque, New Mexico and graduated from St. Olaf College in '97 where he ended up studying psychology and multicultural studies. He currently works in the IT field and is active in the Freethought movement.

Afterwards, a bunch of us will be going to The Panda Garden Buffet for Chinese food and conversation. Specters, phantoms and wraiths eat free!

Had to work and my day at work sucked. I wish I could have been there--it would have been more fun! It got 4 stars so it must have been good! Hopefully next time. :)

Thanks to Todd for the great presentation. We found it really interesting and I'm glad we were able to make it out. I wish we could have stayed longer and chatted more. It was really nice to finally meet some of you. :-)

I was unfortunately very late, but what I saw was very much worth the drive.

I really enjoyed him describe his transformation from believer to skeptic.

It was about an hour too long--not enough substance. The powerpoint should be dispensed with or revised. He stayed on each slide way too long; the pictures were uninteresting and he didn't do anything with the bullet points. At the very least he could have added them one at a time. I felt tricked by the title. I thought he actually did this for a living and had experiences from which to draw. I kept waiting for something interesting but felt that I just got an infomercial for James Randi. It was a waste of my time and a pity because it colors my perception of MN Atheists.

A polished performance, but I still believe in UFOs!
