Team Atheist Polar Plunge for the Special Olympics, Feb. 9, 1 p.m., Coon Rapids

Join the Minnesota Atheist Polar Plunge team and raise money for the Minnesota Special Olympics! Jump right in with us or help us out from the sidelines as we throw ourselves into supporting this worthy event! Each plunger is asked to raise $75.00 or more, so if you can't make it but want to help, please pledge to support one of our team members.

Every year crowds of devoted winter enthusiasts take a dip in Minnesota lakes to raise money for our state's Special Olympics. This February Minnesota Atheists is joining in, and we want you to be a part of it. The time is approximate (we'll update this page as the day approaches), but the fun and excitement is definite—you have to experience it for yourself to understand.

Free Minnesota Atheists t-shirts will be given to all team members, and we welcome suggestions to add to our plunge wear. The more colorful and coordinated our look, the better! Plungers will need a change of clothes, and twin heated tents will be available for boys and girls. For more information, visit the Polar Plunge Tips and Policies Page:

http://www.plungemn.org/tipspolicies

Register or pledge to a plunger at:

http://www.plungemn.org/

Afterwards we'll head over to a local Davanni's to warm our insides with pizza and hoagies. Here's the address:

[masked]th Ave NW
Coon Rapids, MN 55448

(It's just off Highway 10 & Round Lake Blvd. Look to the north or you'll miss it.)

Please tell us in your RSVP if you'd like to plunge, be part of our support team, or pledge. Whatever you do, don't miss the chance to join in the fun!

Can I tweet video link and ask for retweets (so we can all be famous)? Is everyone ok with this idea?

      February 10, 2013

  • Bernadette

Now that I am back in the land of the living after a good long rest I wanted to thank everyone: the jumpers for jumping in the cold water and raising the funds, our cheerleaders and photographers for your support and everyone who donated money. It was a great event for a great organization. Hope to see you all there next year with even more people joining.

Really proud of the plungers! S.O. is such a great charity!

  • Jack C.

This was a great experience, and I'm looking forward to next year. Thanks to Bernadette for organizing and to our cheerleaders for their support and photos. A video of our jump will be posted, and I'll send an announcement saying where it can be viewed.

    • Heather H

The video I took is too big to email. I could post it to YouTube, but I would have to do it on my personal account and I would rather it be on the Minnesota Atheists Account. I will see what I can do.

Sorry we didn't stick around. We had a lot of shoppibg to do. It was fun, though!

Gotta shop when visiting the cities! Thank You for making the drive and jumping!

BRRRRRRR!! I didn't jump, but showed my support.

Thanks, Heather! You're right--the Broadway Pizza location is much more convenient. I'll take the shuttle from there.

    February 9, 2013

  • Jack C.

Bernadette, do you know if we need to check in on the day of the plunge, or are we already checked in? I'm planning to take the shuttle from Andover Lanes, by the way. Afterwards I'll take it back to get my car before going to Davanni's.

    February 8, 2013

    • Phil C.

We are checked in. Bernadette has our wristbands and shirts for participating.

      February 8, 2013

    • Heather H

It looks like the Broadway Pizza shuttle location is right beside the Davanni's, so that location is probably ideal to park.

      February 9, 2013

  • Eric

Way to go you guys! Thanks for doing this.
Somebody will be taking pictures of our team's plunge, right?!

    February 7, 2013

    • Bernadette

We have a great cheer team signed up so I am sure we can produce some pictures and video.

      February 7, 2013

      I will bring my camera!

We have raised over $600. Way to go team MN Atheists. I am looking forward to seeing everyone and jumping into to cold water. Don't forget we will be eating after. Bring a change of clothes, shoes and a towel. I will be arriving at 1:00 to watch the jumpers before us. Please arrive no later than 1:30. You can call me at[masked] if you can not find me.

    See you all tomorrow.

So, I see that this starts at 1:00.. Do we know where this group is in the line-up? Or does that not get determined until the day of?

    February 3, 2013

We do not have a time. I am going to check the team in on Friday and post the time as soon as I have it. If anyone does not have access to internet on Friday night you can call me at[masked]

I went to a Party City today and saw some things we could wear, including purple tinsel wigs, bead necklaces, nerd glasses, and purple face and body paint. What do you plungers think?

I think what Phil is referring to is the handkerchief hats the Pythons wore in their Gumby skits. That's fine with me, but won't they float away in the water?

    January 30, 2013

    • Bernadette

The water should not be high enough for our heads to get wet. I think all the options are great and wearing a mix of stuff can be fun.

      January 30, 2013

    • Bernadette

Also with shoes I would recommend wearing shoes that you are ok with throwing away after the jump unless they are water shoes. I am going to wear sweat pants. I have jumped in jeans before and it was not a good idea. a lot of people jump in shorts.

      1 · January 30, 2013

  • Jack C.

Let's wear the most recent t-shirt, the light purple one with the marriage equality statement on the back. If you've got one, please wear it. I'll bring extras for those who don't. As for the rest, we could color-coordinate dark blue pants. Anyone interested in funny headgear, like antennae? If so, I could stop by a costume shop and pick them up. We once wore lab coats at an event like this, but I don't have access to them anymore.

    1 · January 29, 2013

    • Phil C.

What about the handkerchief the Mr Gumby character wears in Monty Python TV show.

      January 29, 2013

    • Stephanie

Ok, I definitely will need a t-shirt. I don't have one. I'm up for pretty much anything that coordinates, as long as I can get it in reasonable time.

I won't be attending, but will pledge $ for Jack, and wish everyone the best!

    January 29, 2013

  • Stephanie

Are we wearing anything in particular? Besides the shirts, I mean. Did anyone come up with anything funny/cool/quietly waterproof? Will there be a sign up for us to meet somewhere?

    January 28, 2013

    • Bernadette

I have not heard any ideas for costumes. I am ok with just the shirts. I will be holding a sign and have my phone on me. I can be reached at[masked]-6089. I will go to the place the night before to get a better idea of what the set up looks like and be able to provide better details as it gets closer.

      January 28, 2013

  • Jack C.

I plan to plunge. Anyone who is persuaded to pledge for me, please put it on record. Any amount is appreciated.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
