Announcing a new Meetup for Minnesota Atheists Meetup Group! What
: Maple Grove Book Club: Thomas Paine's Rights of Man by Christopher Hitchens When
: Tuesday, January 11,[masked]:00 PM Where
: Byerly's Meeting Room
12880 Elm Creek Blvd N
Maple Grove, MN 55369
It appears that our best location in terms of hours and space will be the Cafe Room inside Byerly's, not to be confused with the Community Room which is just inside the front door. There's a Caribou Coffee inside Byerly's, just to the right as you walk in, that serves coffee only until 8pm, so get your beverage when you arrive and head over to the Cafe Room which has a fire place and is open until 10pm. So, you're looking for Byerly's--the Caribou and Cafe Room are located inside the store.
"Thomas Paine was one of the greatest advocates of freedom in history, and his Declaration of the Rights of Man
, first published in 1791, is the key to his reputation. Inspired by his outrage at Edmund Burke's attack on the French Revolution, Paine's text is a passionate defense of man's inalienable rights."
"Since it's publication, Rights of Man
has been celebrated, criticized, maligned, suppressed, and co-opted, but in Thomas Paine's Rights of Man
, the best-selling commentator and polemicist Christopher Hitchens marvels at its forethought and revels in its contentiousness. Hitchens, who as been called " a Tom Paine for our troubled times" (The Independent, London), is a political descendent of the great pamphleteer. In this vivid and engaging work he demonstrates how Thomas Paine's book forms the philosophical cornerstone of the United States of America, and how "in a time when both rights and reason are under attack, the life and writing of Thomas Paine will always be part of the arsenal on which we shall need to depend."
To help you plan ahead, we'll be discussing the following in upcoming months:
Looking ahead, we'll be discussing the following at future book club meetups:
February: The Loser Letters: A Comic Tale of Life, Death, & Atheism by Mary Eberstadt (something lighter)
March: The Complete Idiot's Guide to 2012 by Synthia & Colin Andrews (probably a good idea to bone up on the Mayans' prophesy before it's too late, right?)
