Meetup Description: This year, warm up your brain before relaxing at the Winter Solstice Dinner!
OK, you're an atheist so you follow no deity. However, that doesn't mean that we can't postulate possible gods for the purposes of discussion.
We'll be choosing attributes for our chosen gods. Feel free to choose attributes you used to hold for a deity, or just select which characteristics you think most people think their deity has. Once done, we'll see how well your deity stands up to metaphysical analysis and logic. Do you think your god can be both all loving and all powerful? Do you think your god is a Creator and eternal?
We'll be discussing the Problem of Evil, along with logical arguments against claims of a gods abilities, the problem of loving too much, and whether the Universe would cease to exist without your chosen god.
Why is this useful to atheists? Often times, believers don't think about what they mean when they say they believe in God. If you start to understand the characteristics people give to God and why certain combination are difficult to reconcile, maybe you'll get your believing friend to at least reconsider his or her's unquestioned assumptions. OK and maybe there is a man in a red suit flying about the world in one night clogging up chimneys with plasma TV's. But, for one afternoon, we can pretend.
We'll be gathering starting at noon and starting the main presentation at 12:30. The main presentation will be finished at 1:30, but people are welcomed to stick around and chat until 4. This meeting will be interactive and informal. If you need to leave during the presentation, feel free.
We will be collecting supplies for the Bridge for Youth program for homeless children to be given to the organization at the Winter Solstice Dinner later in the evening. If you won't be making it to the Solstice Dinner, feel free to bring a donation to this meeting.
This event is free and open to the public. We will have snacks and refreshments available and you can bring your own if you wish.
