What is West Coast Swing?
West Coast Swing is a smooth modern style of partner dancing that is focused on technique, improvisation and musical interpretation. West Coast Swing is one of the most adaptable and spontaneous partner dance styles around and can be danced to a wide variety of music. Because it is constantly evolving to reflect modern music and trends, West Coast appeals to people of all ages and musical tastes. West Coast Swing originated from Lindy Hop and has been evolving ever since. Today, WCS is identified by the smooth look that comes from its use of resistance and compression to create elasticity. It is a linear dance, where the leader primarily travels only on the first step of each move and the follower travels back and forth past him, initially in a slot and eventually in an hourglass shaped area. WCS highlights the importance of partner connection and technique while allowing both partners the ability and freedom to express individual musical interpretation. Allowing for timing variations, rhythm changes, rotation and height changes, as well as individually arm styling. West Coast Swing definitely becomes more addictive the better you get at it and usually leads to a life-time love affair with the dance and the community.
