The Metropolitan Japanese + English Language Commu Pages

The MJELC Mission: We are a social community in the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area who share Japanese and English as a second language and acknowledge the best of both Japanese and American culture.

The Conversation Partner Program is for anyone interested in Japanese or English as a second language. The idea of a Conversation Partner is for two people to work one-on-one for the purpose of language exchange. A small group may also work together all as Conversation Partners for the same objective.

Details about our Conversation Partner Program and our expectations for this program can be found here.

We are a community sharing events centralized around language exchange and cultural exchange. In other words, people who want to speak (or hear) Japanese or English may join. It is open to all skill levels. People who have an interest in Japanese or American culture may also join. However, as it should be with any group you may discover through social media, the safety and the well-being of our members comes first. It is expected that everyone abide by the following basic guidelines:

Before you join, for the safety of our members, we kindly ask you to provide us with a brief introduction about yourself and answer the questions you should receive when you request to join. If you leave the questions blank, your request to join will be declined.

Bearing in mind that our focus as a community lies in language exchange and cultural exchange, you may not solicit within your introduction or within any of the supplementary questions you will be asked during your request to join. Do not post your phone number or your e-mail address in your introduction or within any of the supplementary questions as our organizer qualifies this also as soliciting. Profiles with soliciting will be declined!

Per's rules, people under 18, being considered minors, are not able to join as members. However, if you are under 18, you may still join us as a guest of someone who is a member as long as that member accompanies you at all times.

1. The Cardinal Rule - Respect one another!

In short, this means that hazing and/or harassment will not be tolerated. In addition, please do not treat our community as a dating service. And finally, please make every effort to avoid sensitive topics like politics, religion, racial/ethnic stereotypes, and any sexual topics.

Details about Our Cardinal Rule and also our Three Strikes Rule can be found here.

2. Be active!

We know it's difficult with how a person's daily life can make him or her busy, but please do your best to make an effort to join us for events. Many times, members have joined us and then participated little to no times. Please understand that this is a community and not like a Facebook group that people join just because everyone else is doing it. We want the best for our members and that means that we want our members to be active. Break a leg and join us for events. It's the only way to make this community a true community.

Details about our Inactive Members Policy can be found here.

3. Keep a positive attitude, and let's have a really great time!

At the end of the day, we are a community that shares common goals and common interests in language exchange and cultural exchange within the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. If we are not having fun at the various activities we do together, we have no community to share within our area and with the rest of the world. Our organizers care about its members. Have fun in this group!

Unlike a classroom setting, we meet in a casual environment such as a restaurant, a coffee house, or even online using Skype to network with our members in Japan. People then simply form natural conversations or practice groups. We also feature a Conversation Partner Program where members may unofficially work either one-on-one or in a small group to practice language exchange. If you are looking for a conversation partner, our organizers will help to find you one.

Yes you may. You are always welcome to invite guests to an event, or to refer them to to sign up.

Our schedule has a tendency to change frequently. We currently have some recurring events that take place on Tuesday nights, Saturday afternoons, and Sunday afternoons. We usually also have an event scheduled for Saturday nights. Some of our events occur monthly while others recur weekly. The best advice is to keep an eye on the calendar to see what's new.

Yes. There is no cost to join us and will not be just as long as we as a community can pay our bills (through donations members may make at any time). If we meet at a restaurant, people pay individually at the end. Some venues such as a karaoke studio would have an equally shared cost. Otherwise, it is our expectation that we are never going to ask you for money. However, donations to our community are always welcome.

If you do want to donate,

feel free to chip in!

You can also click on the green Chip In button located on the left hand side of our page. Donations will be used to compensate any members who host our occasional Cook + Social event and also the required subscription fee for this group to stay on which is $144 per year. If we receive very generous donations, special events may also include a free Dine + Social event or a trip paid in full.
