Microformats & Metadata - What Every Designer and Developer Needs to Know

6:00 - 6:30pm Food/Networking
6:30 - 8:00pm presentation

Steve Robinson will explain why describing your content above and beyond tags is important and run through the various options to do so. Additionally, he will cover how this impacts the design and layout of a website.

Specifically, Steve will cover the following technologies:

  • Meta tags
  • Microformats
  • RDFa
  • Microdata
  • Schema.org
  • OpenGraph

He will cover off on which to use, when, and why and how they impact the design process.  We'll get a little technical, but nothing that should scare away a designer with a little HTML experience.

Thank you to our host, The Hudson

The Hudson is a combination loft-style work environment, business resource center, and coffee/winebar in Milwaukee's Third Ward. It describes itself as an inspiring hub where you can easily connect with peers, new leads and resources and ultimately a destination to grow your business!

Was able to learn something new, and gain advice, and was also able to build on what I already know. I was able to meet some knowledgable members. I look forward to attending more!

Steve, thanks for the presentation and links! It was nice to get an historical/chronological overview of this subject, including the people behind each movement.

Awesome overview of the different metadata formats, where they originated and how each can be used most appropriately and effectively. Steve also gave an excellent presentation that was concise, information packed and easy to understand.

    Hey Steve,

No worries! There was actually a hackathon last night and I ended up presenting last minute for a buddy who was out of town.

But really, thank you so much for posting these excellent resources. As a UX/QA/Dev nerd, I really appreciate it!

See you at the next meetup!

Steve was organized, entertaining and had really done his research. Great use of Prezi

http://html5.validator.nu/ might be a better validator if you're playing on the cutting edge. it generally responds faster to changes in the HTML5 spec than the W3C validator does.

    Hi Alicia,
Sorry we conflicted with the Spreenkler meetup. That shouldn't happen again. It was a tight fit with Joomla Day Midwest and a joint meetup (Wordpress, Web, and Media) the week before, and the Thanksgiving holiday the week after. Sorry you couldn't join us.

Very well done presentation, first 5 star rating I've given.

Excellent presentation, Steve, you covered a lot of pertinent "data" in a short time and very succinctly!

I really wish I could have been there! Unfortunately, I haven't been able to clone myself yet so that I can be two places at once (I really hope to make it to the next meetup!).

Thanks so much, Steve, for posting these testing tools! They are going to be of great use :)

Anyone brave enough to suggest a venue or date?

You might want to expand this topic, because it will be hard to cover this subject properly without also covering the assault on microformats launched this summer by Google.

Please let me know when there is a date and location for the September Meet-Up.

Did anyone end up presenting on this? If not, please let me know. I would love to work with you to get this presentation going. Thanks! Message me and let's chat.

Um, date math error. That was supposed to be 24th, not 22nd.

    May 4, 2011

  • arlen

4th tuesday would be the 22nd, not the 17th, but I've been out of touch with this group, and maybe you've changed the usual date.

I could cover using the extended data attributes in 5 minutes or so; they're fairly simple. Microdata itself is the full topic, covering microformats, custom data and RDFa.

RDFa was born in the mind of XHTML, which is making backfitting it into the non-XML web, um, interesting.

Are we on for the 17th?

How about a Tuesday? Say March 22nd? I'd like to settle on the fourth Tuesday of the month going forward.

I could talk about it... But I can't make it on Wednesdays. :/ I'll ask any other Web414 folks if they are available.

Is there anyone who can present on this topic? I know a little, but I have no applied knowledge.

YES! i'm very interested in this, i'll definitely go to it. particularly interested in web information indexing that is resulting out of all this semantic markup, but that's probably for a post-meetup discussion over a few beers :)

@Pete & Chris: I still think Microformats are a neat topic idea--especially if someone can also address 'microdata' and 'RDFa' (or 'custom data attributes'?), which seem to be brought up in the same breath, as other ways of extending semantic HTML. I have to admit, though, any Ruby on Rails terminology might be well over my head!

I have a talk about Microformats that I could give, depending on scheduling. It's a pretty hot topic right now because of the new HTML 5 native microdata support. I'm currently working on building a Ruby gem for using Microformats and microdata inside of Ruby on Rails projects.

    I'd attend.

It's a good topic to explore. I talked about Microformats at the Milwaukee Web Design Meetup once... but it was 2006. :)
