(952)[masked]

Meet and Greet in the Nerdery Cafeteria, 6:30-7pm

The Nerdery provides us pizza and non-alcoholic drinks; this is a great time to network, discuss your latest projects and just hang out for a bit prior to all of the knowledge exchanging.

Meeting

Welcome with Daniel J. Post 7pm

State of the State 7:15pm. ~30-40 minutes

A few local recruiters take a minute or ten to present a data-driven, miles-high overview of what kind of jobs employers are trying to hire for these days.

  • 5 minutes each - have 2-4 different recruiters discuss the kinds of job/trends they're seeing. (Speakers TBA)
  • 25 minutes - Q&A and/or meet&greet. Get to know the recruiters & contractors around you, or talk about current working conditions.

Health Break, 15 minutes

Topic 2: To Be Announced, ~20 minutes
(with so many great topics to talk about, Daniel is having choice paralysis. Someone will present something from the suggested topics)

Post-Meeting

Sports Page, as late as we want

For those that want to join in some beers after to the meeting, we will be meeting at Sports Page.

    Great discussion today on recruiting in tech here in MN. Thanks to the recruiters for the presentations and great Q&A! I enjoyed it.

    There was lots of talk on frontend development and how hot the market is for it, so if you really want to juice your frontend skills and get heavier into it, please consider attending this really awesome event coming right here to Minnesota:

      Here's a tip: if you sign up for the free trial at the bottom of that page, I send out discount codes and other additional previews for free beyond what you get just when you sign up. Also they were supposed to send out a discount code through the mailing list but I'm not sure if that ever went out.

    I really enjoyed this. I think presentations/panels like this, with content that is not strictly technical, are valuable because these are topics that we as developers may find harder to learn about on our own (I don't think O'Reilly has published a book on how to work with a recruiter.)

    Nailed it!
    The presenters brought useful information and the Q&A was thoughtful and interesting throughout. Thanks everyone for making this one a success!

    I thank Daniel for organizing. Brett, David and Adam are open-minded during Q&A.

    I'll only be at the beer meeting roughly 5:45-6:15pm.
    If you're going earlier than that, save us a table & keep your eyes open for members for me!

      Sorry I have a client meeting at 7, entrepreneurs & freelancers have tough schedules to work around.

    • Mike S.

      I guess that means we'll just have to spend the time talking about real frameworks like ZF2 ;) Sorry Robert, couldn't resist :)

    From our Sponsor (look left - yup we have sponsors!), I got 4 nice new webdev books that I'll be giving away at the September Meeting.
    * Smashing HTML5 (ISBN[masked])
    * HTML & CSS (ISBN[masked])
    * Real-World Solutions for Developing High-Quality PHP Frameworks and Applications (ISBN[masked])
    * PHP and MySQL 24-hour Trainer (ISBN[masked])

    To be eligible to win a book, come to the meetup and bring a friend! Or something. We'll try to figure out some process to determine who wins a book, but whatever that is, I guarantee people who brought a friend get first choice of the books.

    Haven't precisely locked down who will speak yet, but it's time to announce!

      Sorry. I noticed yesterday that there was not a date on this, then was distracted by something shiny.
      Corrected.

      No problem. I should also take this moment to point out that mnphp.org is no longer forwarding here properly :(

    Dan - I wouldn't have a problem doing that, as I've met a good number of the Group "in person" in the past (at the last one I presented at last summer I saw some of the guys I've known over the past 5 years; Willbanks, Kandels, Robert Speer, Tom Good, etc). I actually think you were the only one NOT there last time! I'll check with the better half and see if I have a pass to head down there tonight to catch up w/you guys...Akiban looks interesting too...

    Adam - We'd be happy to have you.
    You'll be about the fourth recruiter I've been in contact about this. For some reason none of them have done the follow-up I've asked of them, i.e. to actually show up at a meeting or beer meeting so you can meet us in person *before* we give you the floor at one of our meetups.
    We're getting together tonight: http://www.mnphp.org/events/61745942/
    Show up tonight & you'll get first dibs on this topic for the next meetup.
    Other recruiters: Please show up too.

    Dan - I gave about a 25 min presentation on this last year at the Group, going over current trends, companies looking for solid open-source growth in the next year, many of the companies I've recruited for in the open-source world and my thoughts on their environments. I've placed around 15 PHP FT/perm developers in the past 4-5 years, with a good number of them being part of this group. I'd be open to a more in-depth presentation than last time; I can coordinate if there's interest...

    We should get Chris "I'm an nerd hunter not a recruiter" from the nerdery's new(ish) recruiting team and maybe someone in sales team to talk about the trends they see in skill demand. Likely a Win / Win for everyone and gives the Nerdery a presentation pattern for getting in front of several of these meetups

    My experience with recruiters is that they are outrageously ignorant of the technologies they are trying to recruite people to do. I have interviewed with several, who never understand a word I said in response to their own questions. They are less-than-useless middle and I do not work with them. Companies would be just as well off (or better off) to hire people through their own Human Relations departments -- they are wasting money for NO expertise. The job descriptions provided: INADEQUATE

    If it's not clear, I think this should be a social meeting, not a chance for recruiters to actively recruit.
    My personal aim in this group is to get in touch with more PHP users, so I can expand my circle of resources (recruiters contact me almost every day), and so I can be a resource members can go to if they're looking for work

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
