MoMo #15 - Internet of Things and Beyond

de Duif (map)

Selected By: Marc Fonteijn

First Batch of RSVPs gone. Come back for the final RSVP round on Monday, March 22th 12:00 sharp!!

Are you ready for another Mobile Monday? Monday, March 29th, we organize MoMo #15 on the exciting subject: Internet of Things and Beyond. Read on to learn more!

In short
* Date - Monday, March 29th
* Time - 16:00-19:00 (excluding drinks, doors open at 15:00)
* Location - De Duif (Prinsengracht 756, Amsterdam | Map)

Why does a superpower such as China focus on this domain? Did you know Gartner reported that by year end 2012, physical sensors will create 20% of the non-video internet traffic? In the March edition of the McKinsey Quarterly the impact of the upcoming connected devices is examined. This is an area to keep an eye on.

We are about to complete the line-up. Speakers who have confirmed so far:
* Alexandra Deschamps (LinkedIn) - Co-founder Tinker.it, Twitter
* David Orban (LinkedIn) - Founder WideTag, Advisor and European Lead of Singularity University, Twitter
* Menno Huisman (LinkedIn) - Co-founder Booreiland - twitter

We will twitter about new speakers once more speakers confirm, or keep an eye on this space.

RSVP opens next Monday
That's right! Monday, March 15th (12:00 sharp) we'll release the first badge of 350 RSVPs. Make sure you are in time for the first round of RSVPs, past events sold out within little more than 10 minutes. People who can't RSVP Monday, will have another chance for the final tickets on Monday, March 22nd (12:00). RSVPs will be available via Meetup.com/momoamsterdam (this page) and are free of charge.

To help you remind the RSVP release, CM offers a SMS service to notify you in time (subscribe/read more). Remember: Mobile Monday is free to attend, but an RSVP is mandatory.

Enjoy your weekend!

Cheers!

The first talks were more about the Internet of Peripherals. Is connecting a lamp to your PC via a I/O board and USB fundamentally different from connecting a printer? IoT is going to have a bigger impact than that.

Always good to see people get inspired. Nevertheless being inspired is starting you imagination. You get your hopes and dreams up for the future. So next to all the hopes and dreams of utopia for the sake of some being (or God) for once I would like to see a critical speaker at MoMo. Talking about the beyond needs critisism, not only fairytales to fuel our imagination ;-) Still fairytales are one of the greatest things out there. To believe is easy, waking up and get to work is difficult.

Mind and paradigm shifts are great to study. And it is equally great to see MoMo shift from focused on 'mobile hardware' to 'contexting'. It's great to see how MoMo opens up new worlds to people who - might - never had taken that step by themselves. It makes MoMo more and more valuable as it - nowadays - connnects worlds. Next step? Introduce critical thinkers ;)

Excellent speakers, lots of interesting things to think about.

I would liked to have seen more focus/thinking about how to standardize some of this stuff though. So we arnt just linking random things together, but building modules allowing any arbitrary links to be made.
We need a standard for not only "physical hyperlinks", but also a means to exchange them, and code with them. So any object can arbitrary be linked with any data. (or, in other words, Image/RFID/other <> URI)

The Internet Of Things isn't worth much if it doesn't solve any problems. I haven't seen any real solutions at MoMo #15, only ideas in search of a market, which is the wrong way round imo. The Singularitarians however seem to think they will solve ALL our problems, which is a bit idealistic. Nothing wrong with that, at least it makes for an interesting case

@William how did this MoMo not show you that small sensors can save our world in making more issues explicit? Like, where to save energy, optimize usage of water or indicate other waste reducing opportunities?

@Jef Don't get me wrong, I'm a believer. I think IoT has the potential to solve a lot of our problems, but I didn't see any devices/services that have the potential to do this at MoMo #15, it was just a lot of theory

When I saw a slide in Andrew's deck with rice and beans decorated with small red dots, I imaged mobile chips stuck to the rice, that could measure temperature, acidity, and overall conditions, all the way through our digestive systems... I felt as if I was going back to momo ams #14... ;-)

    Very interesting!
  • Arthur Nooter
The beyond part is inspiring; specially the shift of focus towards thinking and imagination coupled with basic acting in broad daylight. Great event!
  • Dirk-Jan Koeman
Last speaker was da bomb! I will go thru my biology notes of highschool again, lol!
  • Pascal de Mul
This momo was less interesting for me: only three speakers and a very short demo; and two speakers came with high-brow philosophical talks instead of on-topic examples. These would have been interesting in a mix of many concrete speakers, but now high-brow philosophy was the main event. The standards were set very high after the gripping, idea-filled, compelling, examples-led, concrete, inspiring, fast-paced show that was momo mHealth. Those standards were not fulfilled. Looking forward to the next one though!

my first experience with MoMa > I'm coming back...like it!
  • Pepijn van der Spek
    Great topic, great speakers!
  • Mariet de Haas
Compared to my high expectations of MoMo, not so good... Orban was really bad, making a theory way beyond his area of expertise, Huisman and Deschamps-Sonsino learned me some things, but this was all. The mystery guest was very interesting, but the link with internet of things could have been better. I expected a meeting more to the point and with much richer content!
  • Bart Fussel
Some great speakers, interesting subjects. Only remark: it might hoover to far away from mobile. Personally I think the Biotech part is very interesting!
  • Hans Korff
Voor de pauze inleidend, na de pauze baanbrekend en over de horizon heen schetsend.
  • Ron Verweij
    Mindbogging keynote, Interesting subject
  • Dirk te Winkel
Great event and always good to be at MoMoAms. I like the variety of speakers, with presentations ranging from concrete to abstract and with practical solutions to scientific thoughts. The link with mobile is becoming a bit vague, however, if you want to innovate for future users (or should I say 'people'?), you should not focus on what mobile is today, but extend it to what it will become tomorrow.

This was the first MoMo I didn't find inspiring. And I miss the link with Mobile. Stick to Mobile it's what you are, and we are far from the end of the mobile revolution. Mobile is what made you relevant to a growing number of people. Whatever the subject is, make sure there is a mobile connection to it.
  • Rob Been
First speakers were a bit meh, but the last two really made this event worthwhile :)
  • Gerrit Niezen
Great talks and interesting views on the Internet of Things. Well presented and wonderfully organized.
  • Jef Martens
Inspiring, maybe for some too far 'out there', but just right for me. Especially the jump to diy genetics was great. Imagination is the only limit...
  • hans pronk
    Speakers lineup was great.
  • bert de boer
I love the internet things and beyond part! This Andrew Hessel talk makes me still think, inspires me and gives me a strong feeling of the beautifull future still ahead. And thx MoMoAms team for the organisation of this event !!
  • Gianfranco Chicco
the organizers of MoMo Amsterdam keep on surprising me with great shows. The theme of the evening is always addressed in an original way that opens your mind to new possibilities, new developments around the world and what the future will be... not just merely best practices or tech chit-chat.
  • Femke Marcar
Great taks by Menno Huisman and Andrew Hessel. I m inspired!
  • Liou Yamane
Last two speakers were the best. Pre-break session were at very a basic, introductory level, should have gone more into depth.
  • Michael van Wetering
Great speakers/program, very interesting. Like the beyond part, enough info on IoT and the beyond stuff was really fascinating. I'm definitely going to RSVP for next momo.
  • Paul Stork
Great inspiring talks. The first two were more of a demo and it would have been better if these were really demo's (with a good video) instead of half visions of the future (second demo), mixing reality and vision did not really work for me.
  • Sergio Cordeiro
1st things first: nice speaker line up. I really liked the order of how the discussion build up! Congratulations for the technical organization, everything seemed to have worked smoothly! Thanks!!
  • Bas van de Haterd
    no the best momo
  • Rolf de Swart
Interesting stuff as always, but a little too scientific for my taste this time. Maybe it's time to start BioWednesday? Nevertheless i'll be looking forward to MoMo#16
  • maarten Voorhoeve
The last talk on singularity was great. But I mis the link to Internet of things and mobile business (it may be a lack of my knowledge). At the end I got a bit of a feeling that Momoams was used as promotion talk for the introduction of "singularity university". Still an interesting afternoon. Thanks for arranging it.
  • Samuel Vissotto
    Great presentations, once again!
  • Arie den Boon
Starting slowly, the quality and passion grew to great heigths, and so was the level of the discussions. Good I was in the front rows, sound quality was not so good.
  • Stefan Veen
This was my first MoMo and I was happily surprised. The meetup was very well organized and the hospitality was pleasant. The speakers were visionary and well prepared. There was a good atmosphere and the talks were directed towards the positive. A little more room for some criticism and discussion could have been interesting.
  • Antwan
There were interesting speakers, a lot of information and a nice atmosphere. Especially Andrew Gellar had a great speech with received a lot of nice reviews. It was my first 'congress' and it left me with a positive feeling!
  • Arjan Spigt
Before the break the Internet of Things could have had more depth and with more directions towards the future. After the break, the boyond was interesting and inspiring.
  • Hans Tienhoven
Interesting content. Very well organized, interesting people. Relaxed atmoshpere.
  • Ramon
truly inspired by the talk of Andrew Hessel... wow!
