Once upon a time literal:昔々  ideomatic:或る日の事

Above is an example of how we will be studying SATC.  As you can see, we will be analyzing the transcript line by line and looking at the literal translation as well as the idiomatic translation.  We will also be discussing the cultural differences (Japan/US) and perspectives on the situations that the characters find themselves in!

...................................................................................................................................

Last year one of our most successful events was a 3 part study of Sex and the City.  That is, we met once a week for three or four weeks to cover the English transcript and then (the Japanese transcript separately) of the same episode of Sex and the City. We all participated by reading the characters lines, and at any point anyone can ask the group questions about the word, phrase, cultural nuance, cliche etc. We can explore real life Japanese and English phrases from daily conversation. Also we get a view into the cultural differences regarding dating, social intelligence, and emotional intelligence as it relates to Japanese and English. ジョージさんよりメッセージ: この週一イベントは100%無料です!勉強用の無料資料等を用意できるのは、人気ドラマの "Sex & the City" を教材として使って、学校ではなかなか習うことのない「日常会話」などが身に付きますよ!みんなで一緒にドラマをみてその後話したり、質問したり、英語以外にも文化や習慣、今実際に使われている話言葉なんかもみにつきます に遊びにきてください!みんなで楽しく勉強しちゃいましょう!!

1st This is a 100% FREE event. (Please bring your own pen and notebook)
2nd This is a upper intermediate/advanced Japanese/English Event (know at least 800 kanji)
3rd At some point, we will watch the episode in each language.
4. If this event is successful, we can do other episodes of SATC or other shows that members suggest!
5. Look in Nihongo Moriagari's photo album and see photos from last years Sex and the City's events
6.  Guys: Don't be shy SATC is funny, and actually balanced in it's view of the Battle of the Sexes.  Actually, you might learn something!
