RE: [mostlygo] Mostlygo event updates

I'm a beginner, so like the idea of beginner workshops.

Sundays are much, much better for me than Saturdays.

Randy is putting in much more effort than anyone and doing a great job so I
would give him some leeway to set the schedule

Subject: Re: [mostlygo] Mostlygo event updates

I've been pondering on all these issues (among others) after I made the
announcement this morning.

So in trying to be transparent about what my concerns are going forward,
here's the concerns I have w/ the group. Maybe between us all we can
figure out a solution to some of them. If you want to skip all my
blathering, jump to the end where I'll propose some alternatives

=====
1) I'm aware that a good number of members are busy on sundays, or on
saturdays. From the start, I've always had members that go "I'd love to
come, but I can't do Saturday (or Sunday)". I strongly feel that
eventually (certainly not immediately) we should look towards making
both camps happy somehow.

2) Fat Cat is a chill place, but it's loud and people are spread out
awkwardly, having HQ back is a blessing, but is sadly limited by my
personal availability. Alternative spaces are cool, like how Boris has
been holding workshops.

3) We have this problem of cannibalization. If we start having too many
events, we're definitely going to be too thin since I highly doubt
there's many people who are able to come 2 days in a row. If you just
want to just play go constantly, that's what the Internet is for these
days unfortunately. Physically going someplace to play is practically a
luxury these days in NYC.

4) There's an intangible value to scarcity of events. It was probably
annoying to you guys that I'd schedule something at Meetup HQ
inconsistently every 2-3 weeks when I had time. But when it happened, it
was _special_. It hopefully was something to look forward to during the
month.

*) My biggest concern, beyond venue, times, and all that incidental
stuff. Is that Mostlygo is a very loose knit community.
Much of this is clearly my fault, since I'm often occupied and unable to
schedule or attend meetups regularly, and I'll own up to that. But
compounding it, when we all do come together to play, we very rarely
speak to each other for half the day.

It's always been the case, even at HQ, where the first 2-3 hours of the
day in a room of 10 people is dead silent except for stone clatter. It's
only when people are exhausted from playing 1-2 games that they look up,
grab a beer, and start connecting and having conversation. On some
level, that feels "off" to me. I don't want it to be a chatty lounge,
but the opposite extreme doesn't sit well with me either.

====
So here's the options I'm seeing on the table
1) we alternate fatcat, and then have 'structured events' on the days
that don't collide with fat cat. People will be forgetful and confused,
and we're going to accept that.

2) we go back to sunday-only for fat cat, but hold occasional structured
saturday events, for now we'll just accept that saturday will
cannibalize sunday's turnout to some degree. I'm tempted to lean towards
this solution, but deep down it's not compatible for my vision of the group.

3) We re-jigger how we organize events somehow. I'm open to creative
ideas on this one. Anything and everything is on the table here, Hate
Fat Cat for some reason and want to get rid of it? I'm listening. Want
to run a lecture series? Let me know.

In any case, these are the things in our mind. Any changes I make to how
events are scheduled won't kick in at least until next weekend, so we
have plenty of time to hammer these out.

Speak up, be heard, this isn't _my_ group, it's _our_ group.
