Trails of Midlothian/Penicuik - Beginner Friendly :-)

I've been asked to repeat the first loop I lead "Trails of Midlothian". However after bypass trails I realised I was winging it a wee bit due to lack of research time and the fact I have little research time before this run means I'm just going to do exactly what I did last time from Outside Halfords at Straiton Retail Park. However this now means I can reclass this run as Beginner Friendly. This is not to say that it does not have its challenges but most bits can be tackled by most riders.

If you like old school single track and following your nose around an area then this is your kind of trail riding. No manicured designed for purpose trails such as you'd find at Glentress or such like. Its rooty, muddy, loose with steps, fences, rocks at unexpected places and aggressive undergrowth with the added complexity of other non cycling trail users. Most of it doesn't 'Flow' which means by your skill you must master the terrain !!!

I will try to include a bit of the Penicuik Estate, a private estate containing a ruined stately home and many paths either side of the River North Esk as it winds through the area which the public are allowed to and ecouraged to use. To do this will involve the removal of  bits passing through Penicuik and its public park but this means more time off road. I'll also remove the Straiton pond section near the end as it really just adds a mile we dont need !

There will be mud and nettles, goes without saying but I've said it anyway !!!!

Pub Stop will be Roslins 'Auld Original Hotel' a couple of miles from end.

I am really sorry but I have to bug out. A little 37mile XC ride yesterday has left me unable to bend my left knee properly.

    Maybe next time.

Originally put a limit on 12 plus a waiting list but people kept signing up to waiting list so I moved the goalposts. Put yourself on waiting list and i'll include you next time I edit the run description. Your more than welcome to show up but an official RSVP is good for stats etc.

Hi, I know you have put a limit on 12 persons coming but I am fairly experienced...can I tag along anyway?

Did a wee recon at the Penicuik end tonight and I reckon it should be better than last time. No need to cycle through park and town centre plus some new bits of trail found. Fun, Fun, Fun :-)

Lol! Yes I figured it would be uphill...not from Edinburgh originally so will have to study the way. Thx. Unless someone out there wants to take pity on me ;)

Whoops - my apologies - this was in reference to the run on Sunday gone! I had some technical issues with the bike but they will be completed sorted out for your ride this Sunday which I am looking forward to. Sorry for the confusion!

    ????????????????
This reads like the runs already happened. Are you pre-mechanically failing for the run to get it out of the road for later Amanda ?

Many thanks to everyone for you patience with me and my bike on Sunday! I am so grateful for all the marvellous technical consultancy - thank you! Especially to Issay for bringing his car down to pick me up at the end which was fantastic. See you all soon with bike working!

Cycle is easiest way, its about 7 miles heading south but alas mainly uphill from Leith. The map guide should show you what roads to take. Alternatively beg a lift from a fellow participant.

What is the usual/easiest way to get out to this ride? I noticed that Edinburgh doesn't have bike racks on their buses and I am careless. I am out in Leith.

  • Elaine M.

ta muchly Stephen, will be taking the bike to the bike shop in Leith to get it all checked out before then and if you could just give me a heads up on the day of any potential bits I might die that would be delightful!!

Limiting group size to 12 all in for a change. Amount who usually show up is around that number anyway.

  • Stephen S.

Yes its Elaine Beginner friendly, no more difficult than what we did on bypass trails. Any bits I think you need to watch out for I'll warn you of. Might be a wee bit tougher though as a few more hills but the pace will not be flat out by any means. Make sure your gears are fully functioning and your tyres are grippy enough, there is mud !

  • Elaine M.

more importantly Stephen, is it now "Elaine" beginner friendly!?!?

gonna try to make this one.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
