David, Vincent and Jerome, thank you guys for being good sports, I know it was much more difficult than we expected, next time we will have "The Snow Shoes" to make it easier.

  • Hameed

This was a winter climbing conditions, very cold temperatures and plenty of deep snow. Weather was gorgeous, not much winds and the trail was snow and ice at the begining then turning into wast deep or even deeper snow drifts. The snow was soft and at times difficult to navigate, snow shoes were necessary.

I'm coming from Mountain View, anyone want to carpool? We can split gas, if I drive it'll be a Camry (fits 2 more people). Weather says 40% chance of snow Saturday, expect below freezing temps throughout the weekend!

  • Hameed

@Jerome, as you know I have climbed Mt. Whitney several times and last year did the chute 3 times. @Vincent, where are you coming from?

    February 9, 2012

  • Vincent

@Jerome, not sure if the question was for me since I asked about the switchbacks vs chute, but, yes, I have climbed the chute last year in the snow. What a thigh workout!

    February 9, 2012

  • Jerome

Have you already done the chutes in the snow?

    February 8, 2012

  • Hameed

@Vincent, the switchbacks are impassable since the last snow storm, the chute is the way to go, crampons and ice axe are strongly recommended
@Stephanie, we will leave the LP ranger station by 9:am you should be able to make it there easy if you leave LA early.
    @David,good idea to carpool.

    February 8, 2012

  • David C

Stephanie, I can carpool from LA.

    February 8, 2012

  • Vincent

Hi! Any expectations on whether the switchbacks are open or up the chute on crampons?

    February 8, 2012

  • Hameed

Due to winter conditions this will be the long boring, but beautiful Whitney Trail!

    February 8, 2012

  • Eleanor H.

HI Hameed, I would definitely join you on this trip, but I am already skiing this weekend. Please re-post if dates change. And if not have a great climb!

    February 8, 2012

  • Ingrid S.

Its not clear if this is Mountaineers Route or the Long Boring Route ? Please clarify, thanks.
