We'll backpack up the rugged North Fork of Lone Pine Creek and establish a camp from which we can climb classic 3rd-class routes up Whitney and Russell.
Although the daytime weather is usually perfect around October, there will be an extra element of adventure here due to the late season, shorter days (~12 hours sunlight), and cold nights. There could be some new snow on the ground, but the first big winter storms don't usually arrive until late October or November...

Tue October 7: Mt. Russell East Ridge, break camp, hike down, drive back late

The Sierra is going to be hit with what appears to be a real winter storm this Friday and Saturday. Due to this increased uncertaintly, please contact me directly if you would like to join this trip.
Mini trip report: We had a nice time camping at UBSL. The storm died out before we arrived and the weather was great while we were there, albiet pretty cold (about 18F) at night. We made it up to the 13,500' level on Whitney's mountaineer's couloir before getting shut down by icy conditions. We expected similar difficulties on Russell so we headed up to Mt. Dana instead. Dana also had a bunch of snow above 11k but it was manageable and we enjoyed spectacular views of snow-dusted high-country!

This NWS point forecast for near where we will be camping takes elevation into consideration when predicting high/low temperatures. I've found it fairly accurate in the past: http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?site=vef&sma...
