Ostrander Hut Ski Trip: Jan 25 - 27, 2013

  • January 25, 2013 · 8:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Itinerary:
Trip will leave Friday morning, 25 Jan, and return Sunday evening, 27 Jan. We will leave from the Badger Pass ski area. Meet at Badger Pass Ranger Station at 8 am (A-frame), ready to go. Departure time: 8:30 AM or earlier if everyone is present.

Friday: Start skiing at 8:30 am, reach hut by dusk. Make dinner.
Saturday: Ski Horse Ridge, have fun.
Sunday: Ski out in the morning, do some runs along the way.

Cost: $115 NONREFUNDABLE
(If I get my money back I will refund you, otherwise, don’t count on it)

Route: Interested in the Horizon Ridge trail. This is a harder and more strenuous option than the standard route. Metal edge skis and skins will be required. (sorry, due to difference in travel speed, I am limiting this trip to skis, only)

We will plan on group meals. Please take a look at the Conservancy site below for hut amenities or lack thereof, equipment list, and route descriptions. Each group should plan on bringing a stove/pot and bivi or tent (in case you get lost).

I will post a document for carpooling and organizing ourselves. If you don’t have access and are going on this trip, please send me an email.

I will update this meetup site as we go so please check back frequently. Failure to respond to emails or comments directed at you may result in your spot being given to someone else.

Hey, did anyone loose a grey sternum strap to their pack? I found it in my car. You know how to reach me...

It was a fabulous weekend - Stuart thanks so much for organizing. Beautiful scenery, great food (still tasting the scallops), good easy going company, and some fun skiing even though the perfect snow left 2 days before we got there.

    • Stuart

Welcome, at least we got a little "pow" on ice ;-P. No matter now lousy or good the snow, backcountry trips promote a camaraderie that cannot be rivaled by a great in-bound's snow day.

  • Stuart

Great group under challenging conditions in a beautiful setting. Encountered all snow conditions from a little powder on ice to breakable crust and rain. Outstanding menu options kept the spirits high.

Yea I 2nd that food was great. I was really concerned that I was going to be starving ;) But was pleasently surprised everyone brought huge portions with lots left over. Was fun to be the cook then next meal be able to sit and just be served ;)

Cool photos! I saw most of you guys on Glacier Point Rd on your way back on Sunday (I was XC skiing there after car-camping in the valley); I said hi to Stefan and Tessa (great to see you again!), and one more guy who took photos of my wife and me, but I didn't catch the name.
Hope to meet you all next time!

Interesting weather, temps peaking at 40-50 degrees, low 40s all week with snow expected next Sat dipping to 30's on our Horse Ridge day. Hopefully, this bodes well for our trip.

I might not have enough time to get ready for this trip (equipment wise) so I will wait for another opportunity later in the season.

    January 15, 2013

  • Stuart

For those on the wait-list who have expressed interest in going, I have sent you information about how to get on this trip. I've forwarded this info only to those who have contacted me.

    January 15, 2013

  • Margarita T.

Please let me know if I can still waitlist for this trip. Thanks

    • Stuart

MT: we may have some exits coming. stay tuned.

      January 14, 2013

    • Stefan

Yes, I’m still interested to go. I got all avy gear and am AIARE L1 cert.

      January 15, 2013

  • Tom

Lots of lessons. This incident demonstrates the importance of ALL persons having a beacon shovel and probe, and knowing how to assemble and use the gear. We should perform a headcount and hands-on gear check at the trail-head. http://unofficialnetworks.com/skier-buried-avalanche-tahoe-video-rescue-114323/

Thanks for the link-Darwinian miss! The lack of B/S/P in this terrain is puzzling and I would definitely not want to ski with anyone w/o on such terrain.

    • Johnny

      o_O

      January 2, 2013

  • Stuart

In case it was missed in the description, above, metal edge skis and skins are required on this trip. Due to the nature of the accumulating snow pack & conditions in the last couple weeks, avalanche will be a risk factor. If anyone has any strong feelings about requiring B/S/Ps on this trip, please speak up. Otherwise, please plan on bringing them.

OK folks, the finance is all taken care of and trip has been moved over in my name and confirmed with YC. I will be sending you a link to a spreadsheet we can share online for coordination purposes between the attending.

I am thinking of doing a little backcountry day trip up to Basin Peak, this is just behind Castle. Anyone interested in Dec 18 or 19 and Dec 27.

    December 5, 2012

    • Johnny

I may be able to sneak out of work on Dec 18/19th as most of the people are disappearing through the holiday anyway... how early are you thinking?

      December 5, 2012

    • Stuart

Probably ~5:30 departure, trip will take all day so back after dinner especially if we take a few runs. Once we have determined interest on dates we can post it as a trip.

      December 5, 2012

  • Stuart

Alright, we have the first quorum of 8. I will be sorting out the payment details to secure this reservation then we can start planning. Is anyone interested in meeting up at Kirkwood for a day of skiing this Sunday?

    November 29, 2012

    • Nate

I'll be up there this Sunday, drop me a line if you head up. Weather may be pretty nasty this weekend...

Hi everyone, please see my emails to you about payment. Use the gmail address I sent you versus the Meet-up-paypal link. If you have already paid via the meetup-link then please forward me your payment receipt. If the receipt does not have my name on it you need to send me a copy of that receipt.

So far, Nate, Andy, Tom, and Jack are paid up. I will wait till after 9 pm to let in the Waitlist due to this mix-up.

    November 28, 2012

  • Stuart

If you would like to go on this trip, please answer the questions in the RSVP questionaire. I just updated them. Thanks.

If you have already paid, you can click RSVP to get to the question. Just don't pay again unless you'd like to enrich my coffers ;-)

    November 28, 2012

  • Stuart

To those on the Attending list, if you do not commit by 5 pm with your PayPal payments, you may be removed to give those on the Waitlist a chance to get on this trip :-O

I'm likely carpooling from Truckee. Also, I know of a nice Tahoe Donner (Truckee, California) 4 bedroom / 3 bath house available during the month of December, including Hanukkah and Christmas. Message me if interested.

    November 28, 2012

  • Stuart

Thanks for your interest and apologies to Tom and Emanuel for lack of space, for now. I will be updating with payment information once I figure out PayPal. Your place will be secured once your non-refundable payment has been made (~$110+PayPal fees). Attendance is limited to BAM members only and the participation rules Stu mentioned in his posting also applies here. I will update meetup info in the next few days and update those attending to their payment obligations.

    • Andy
