LOOKING FOR ERIC

Meet in the foyer at 6.30pm. Movie starts at 7pm and we'll go in at 6.50.
Cheeky mid-week beer at Coopers hotel to follow.

Synopsis: Eric the postman is slipping through his own fingers... His wife has gone, his stepsons are out of control and the house was chaotic even before a cement mixer appeared in the front garden. Life... Eric the postman is slipping through his own fingers...

His wife has gone, his stepsons are out of control and the house was chaotic even before a cement mixer appeared in the front garden. Life is crazy enough, but it is Eric's own secret that is driving him to the brink. How can he face up to Lily, the woman of his dreams that he once loved and walked out on many years ago? Despite the comical efforts and misplaced goodwill of his mates, Eric continues to sink.

In desperate times it takes a spliff and a special friend to help a lost postman find his way, so Eric turns to his hero: footballing genius, philosopher and poster boy, Eric Cantona.

As a certain Frenchman says "He who is afraid to throw the dice, will never throw a six."

The lead actors are Steve Evets and Eric Cantona, with Stephanie Bishop, Gerard Kearns and John Henshaw. It was shot entirely on location in Manchester.

Hello Movie Monsters,

After a brief intermission the Movie Monsters are back with a Dendy Newtown session. We are watching:

500 Days of Summer

I'm looking forward to meeting some new movie monsters and catching up with some old ones.

I'll be in the cinema foyer at 6.30, ticket in hand. Please try to be there between 6.30 and 6.45. The movie starts at 7 and we will head into the cinema ten minutes before start time. If you're late, watch the movie and meet us in the foyer after the movie.

After the movie we might head up to Cafe C for a coffee or the Coopers Hotel for a cheeky midweek beer.

Synopsis: Fans of HIGH FIDELITY and ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND will be charmed by this quirky film that sheds a linear plot in favor of a memory-driven look at a failed romance. Joseph... Fans of HIGH FIDELITY and ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND will be charmed by this quirky film that sheds a linear plot in favor of a memory-driven look at a failed romance. Joseph Gordon-Levitt (BRICK) stars as Tom, a greeting-card writer who dreams of becoming an architect and finding his true love. Zooey Deschanel (THE HAPPENING) plays Summer, a vintage-looking beauty whose ideas about love are entirely modern. As Tom remembers his 500 days with Summer, his mind jumps from moment to moment, largely thinking of the good times in their trouble-filled relationship. Indie darlings Deschanel and Gordon-Levitt are perfectly cast in this sweet, funny film that infuses the typical romantic tropes with reality. Anyone else would have caused audiences to hate Summer, but Deschanel is adorable enough that she still endears herself to viewers. Arthouse favorite Gordon-Levitt hasn’t played a traditional romantic lead since 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU in 1999, but here he proves equally adept at portraying Tom’s sweetness and his neuroses. Music-video director Marc Webb makes his feature debut with (500) DAYS OF SUMMER, and it’s easy to see influences of his past work. The soundtrack boasts songs from Regina Spektor, Doves, Feist, Wolfmother, and, of course, The Smiths, the band that brings the couple together. Webb also adds an innovative style to the dramedy, combining a naturalistic look at love with a non-linear plot, animated vignettes, and a triumphant musical sequence. The film’s mixture of cynicism and romance makes it perfect viewing for happy couples, the recently dumped, and the hopeful singles in the audience.

Samson & Delilah (MA15+) 101 mins
5 stars from both David and Margaret. A must watch Aussie film.

This is the opening week and the film has received a fantastic welcome, so I recommend getting your tickets by 6.30 latest.

We will meet in the Dendy Newtown foyer at 6.30 and we will head inside at 6.45 to get decent seats. The film starts at 7.

As usual, if you're late and can't find us in the foyer, watch the movie and meet us in the foyer after the movie. We will regroup and head to Cafe C one block up some reflection and some cake.

Synopsis: Samson and Delilah live in an isolated world - a remote Aboriginal community in the Australian desert. In amongst a tiny collection of houses, everything here happens in a cycle. Day in and day out - nothing changes, everything stays the same and no one seems to care. Except for Samson, a cheeky fifteen year-old who yearns for the horizon. Even though boredom set in long ago, Samson attempts to occupy himself with his offbeat humour. Unable to express his desire for something more, Samson's private escape comes in a tin - he's a petrol sniffer. When a violent eruption takes place at home Samson breaks the cycle and his journey begins.

Hi Inner West Movie Monsters!

And now for something completely different.....if you loved the animation of HARVEY KRUMPET, you will want to know about our Saturday late arvo/early evening Meetup - MARY AND MAX.

From the creators of the Academy Award-winning short Harvie Krumpet, MARY AND MAX is a uniquely moving new claymation feature that at first appears deceptively simple.

It's a tale of pen-friendship between two very different people; Mary Dinkle (voiced by Toni Collette), a chubby lonely 8-year-old girl living in the suburbs of Melbourne, and Max Horovitz (voiced by Philip Seymour Hoffman), a 44-year-old, severely obese, Jewish man with Asperger's Syndrome living in the chaos of New York. Spanning 20 years and 2 continents, Mary and Max's friendship survives much more than the average diet of life's ups and downs...

Like Harvie Krumpet, MARY AND MAX is innocent but not naive, as it takes us on a journey that explores friendship, autism, taxidermy, psychiatry, alcoholism, where babies come from, obesity, kleptomania, sexual difference, trust, copulating dogs, religious difference, agoraphobia and much much more.

Coffee, gelato or pasta (or all 3) at the Gelato Bar, Norton Street, Leichhardt afterwards.

See you at the movies!

Hi all

Please note the change of time and new venue. Sorry, Dendy now only showing the film in its Canberra cinema. So we are going to Hoyts Broadway which is also one of the Inner West Movie Monster venues. For the drivers Hoyts is a great venue as it has 4 hours free parking with validation of your ticket at the cinema. For those coming by public transport there are frequent buses at the door coming from Central Station and from the inner west.

If you are new to Movie Monsters events make sure you read the procedures on the Message Board. The procedures are the first item posted by Anurag. It will tell you everything you need to know.

I will meet you in the foodcourt on the same level as Hoyts. Have a look at my photo, I'll be sitting at a table near the entrance to the foodcourt, about opposite the Turkish kebab food store (there is only one of them).

Sandra Hall, SMH film critic, had some good things to say about the film. Check out her review on the SMH site, www.smh.com.au

Here's the synopsis of the movie from its promo:

TWO FISTS ONE HEART is a contemporary family drama set in Perth, Western Australia. Anthony Argo is a champion boxer and nightclub doorman. He is trained by his father Joe who has brought his Sicilian values with him to Australia. Joe's proud traditional view of the world increasingly comes into conflict with his son's pursuit of 'la dolce vita'.

Anthony meets Kate who stimulates him with ideas and love. She introduces him to a wider social group, way beyond the Australian society his father has known. Anthony starts to question many of the foundations of his upbringing, in particular, the role that violence plays in the resolution of conflict.

As he assimilates his newfound broader view of the world, while battling with his own personal disappointments, he realises he is now mature enough to be his own man and see his father and his values within the context of his own developing philosophy.

Director:Shawn Seet
Cast:Daniel Amalm, Ennio Fantastichini, Jessica Marais, Rai Fazio, Costas Kilias, Rosemary Lenzo, Tim Minchin

Coffee and dessert afterwards at Glebe.

Two sisters, high school seniors in the early 1980s, awaken one morning to blood red skies and the realization that the human race has been wiped out. It becomes apparant that anyone who was not surrounded by steel when the Earth recently passed through the tail of Haley's comet has been reduced to a pile of red ash (the trace elements of human chemical makeup.) They encounter a rebellious Native American man and take over the air waves at a local radio station in an attempt to get help. Unfortunately, they attract the attention of a group of scientists who knew what the effects of the comet would be. They hid underground in a steel laboratory, but idiotically left the vents open. Now, as various survivors of the comet who were only partially surrounded by steel are decaying into flesh-hungry zombies, the scientists are attempting to come up with a vaccine made of the blood of people who were not infected by the comet. Thus the trio must fight their way past not only roving packs of the cannibalistic dead, but also outsmart a pack of scientists desperate not to become that way themselves.

Come along for some good zombie horror or fun depending on how you are feeling on the night!
