London Indian Film Festival (Movie "GOOD ROAD") and Lunch / Drinks

Hello everyone!

Ok - a long promised and previously undelivered "alternative offering" (the 2nd this weekend actually, wink, along with Roman Holiday) from "Oregon Expat productions"! Apart from my big studio / big-budget leanings, I really do enjoy a good film from smaller / independent studios and international movie industries around the world... in this case, the renowned movie-making industry in India.

Here is the Web Link to the LIFF: http://www.londonindianfilmfestival.co.uk/

Let's try a something a little different and explore some of the rich and extensive catalog of good Indian films being put out every year... Meet me at the BFI Southbank along a beautiful stretch of the Thames in high July Summer!

An interesting Web Link from LondonTown for the BFI Southbank: http://www.londontown.com/LondonEvents/London-Indian-Film-Festival/298e5/

UPDATE (Saturday, 6 July): I changed the date to Sunday the 21st of July, for our event. The festival runs all over London, but I thought the best location for it would be the vibrant (and beautiful) Southbank at Waterloo bridge... and BFI's offering for the LIFF is only on Sunday.

As it is now a Sunday event, thought we could meet to socialize prior to the film, instead of after (it should end approximately 1800 / 6PM). So - let's meet inside the Riverfront Bar (outside if the weather is nice) for lunch and/or drinks at 2PM. The BFI cinema entrance is just around the corner. After the film, there is a nice bar inside the BFI near the information Desk and bookstore that people can meet for drinks if they want to stick around longer.

Here is a Review from the BFI webpage for our film, "Good Road":

India 2012
Directed by Gyan Correa
With Sonali Kulkarni, Ajay Gehi, Keval Katrodia, Shamji Dhana Kerasia
Running time 107 min

A metaphysical road movie following three sets of people as they travel along a desolate stretch of highway in India’s Kutch region. A young boy from Mumbai, separated from his parents, is befriended by a truck driver and his surly assistant who are on a perilous smuggling trip, and a young girl on a deeply personal quest is in imminent danger of becoming part of the flesh trade. The stark beauty of one of India’s most isolated and dangerous locations is strikingly captured in this debut feature. [END REVIEW]

UPDATE (Saturday 20 July): Alas - something has come up and I cannot be there to host this fantastic event. It will still go forward, and everyone can use the COMMENTS section here on the page to coordinate to meet up. The event showtime again for "Good Road" is 4PM - and there should still be tickets available. My suggestion is for everyone to meet in advance of the film at the Riverfront Bar (under the Waterloo Bridge on the Southbank - it is directly in front of where the Book Fair tables usually are) at say, 2PM. That way everyone has time to get there and socialize, and then go together to the cinema. Again - my apologies for having to step down from running this event. Hope everyone has a good time, and I hope to see you at another one soon.

WHAT: The movie "Good Road" (London Indian Film Festival)

WHERE: BFI Southbank at Waterloo (Meeting Point: Outside the Riverfront Bar Front Entrance - where the book fair tables normally are) / NOTE - The Riverfront Bar is directly underneath the Waterloo Bridge where it meets the Thames on the Southbank. Please take a look at the very good MAP on the LondonTown Web Link above.

WHEN: Meeting Time is 1400 (2PM) inside the Riverfront Bar / Showtime: 4PM; Sunday, July 21st, 2013.

Cool - see you there, then? I know this is not my usual kind of film, but am definitely getting excited about this event. Be nice if it comes close to matching Gabriel's cool Terracotta Film Festival event movie (The Vanishing Bullet)!

Hi Brett, I was wondering if there is an area of the cinema where the rest of the group will be sitting (so that I can book a seat in the general vicinity!) Is my first meet up with this group, so not sure how this works! Thanks, Mona

Hello, Mona - everyone buys their own ticket and sits in different parts of the cinema (since we can't chat during the film anyway). Don't worry - if you come beforehand at 2PM, we will be socializing over drinks / lunch at the Riverfront Bar (just around the corner from the BFI - at the river under the bridge).

    Thanks for info re subtitles

    July 9, 2013

I've been to the LIFF in the past. Very often the films are not in Hindi but in other Indian languages but they are always subtitled in English. From the official blurb this film is in Gujarati subtitled in English.

I have no idea as this might be my first meet up. But in English or hindi either will do

Hi this is probably a dim question as it is the Lonon Indian film festival. . But. . Are they in English or subtitled? My Hindi is non existent!!

Hi Linda. Well - not sure about that, to be sure. I checked the website and didn't see mention of it... I am sure as it's playing in the UK it will be subtitled though. I will call BFI to confirm.

UPDATE (6 July): Please note that the date for the event has been changed, to the new date of Sunday, 21 July. The meeting time is 2PM (Riverfront Bar) and the showtime for our film, GOOD ROAD, is 1600 (4PM). Hope everyone can still make it - the festival plays all over London, but I thought the Southbank is too good a location to pass up overall for our event - and their only weekend offering is on Sunday. Hope to see everyone there at the Riverfront Bar (at the BFI Southbank near Waterloo) on Sunday the 21st!

Starting to get excited about this! It should be a fun time down on the beautiful Southbank, in the classic BFI cinema, etc. Little more than a month to go...

Don't get me wrong, I love the summer blockbuster movies but this will make a refreshing change. Loving the venue, Southbank in the summer, can't wait!

Well said, Ruth! I agree, actually... I love the big films of course, but there is a lot of under-represented cinema out there we need to support. Hope you enjoy this one.
