Dinner and a Movie - WORLD WAR Z

Hello movie fans - the Summer Season is here! Then again, the way the movies are these days (Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty, etc. playing in February), you don't have to wait until the sultry days of July anymore.

That said - the studios can still bring out some of the truly "old school epic" bonanzas come Summer... WORLD WAR Z is just such an "Event Movie". Of course, it doesn't hurt when a movie has such a high production value - I have seen the YouTube trailer (see below) and it looks FANTASTIC. While the typical big-budget cinematography and special effects are to be expected in a movie like this (zombie apocalypse) starring an A-list actor like the great Brad Pitt (Fight Club, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Moneyball) - there is reportedly a really touching family saga of a man separated from his family by this almost inconcievable global catastrophe.

Even if it only amounts to mindless entertainment, it looks like it will be fun to watch.

Here is a link to the really COOL trailer on YouTube for the film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Md6Dvxdr0AQ

Let's settle in for some popcorn and chocolate covered raisins, a massively oversized soft drink - and escape from the stress and grind of our daily lives with a truly epic and handsomely crafted distaster flick in the "new-old style".

Here is the link to the Official Website for the film: http://www.worldwarzmovie.com/

Hope everyone is enjoying a great season at the movies... the group's organizers are all putting out a great array of different movies for every taste, but as always please let us know how we are doing, and how we can do better. If a movie / type of film has not been posted yet that you would like to see, let me or the others know and we will try to post one as soon as we can.

Note - we will meet prior to the film at 1330 (130PM) inside the VUE Islington cinema waiting area, near the automated kiosk ticket machines. The film starts at 1415 (215PM).

UPDATE 2 (Monday, June 17th): Here is a good - and honest - newspaper review of a good film with a bit of a "troubled" production... The film by the way is more of a scary action film than a true zombie horror movie: http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/entertainment/movies/movie-dvd-reviews/movie-review-world-war-z-1959037

UPDATE 3 (Tuesday, June 18th): My apologies for the confusion on site location and movie format (3D vs. 2D). I promised a cheaper film this time around and will keep my promise! I found us a cheaper option at VUE Islington in Angel that is only 11 Pounds 80 (not 15.70 as at Cineworld for the 3D). However it is an earlier showtime - the only afternoon time was 1415 (215PM) so we are meeting beforehand at 130PM - at the top of the Escalator in the waiting area by the automated kiosk ticket machines. As a result of the change (we will get out of the film at approximately (1645 / 445PM) it might be a bit early for some to eat - so I will try to find us a place to go that we can either have a meal OR just have a drink or two. I mentioned Desperados in my comments below - but I have to check if they have an area just for having a pint for those who won't want to eat.

UPDATE 4 (Friday, June 21st): As of 1954 (754PM), an email was sent out to the RSVP list of 72 with my mobile number and meeting details. Any new RSVPs are welcome as there should still be tickets available for our movie as it's in the afternoon. If you RSVP later, we meet before the movie in the main waiting area by the ticket kiosk machines - if you head into the film without having met us, you can meet up with the group in the same waiting area as before - as we will be going to a nearby pub / restaurant (probably Desperados) at 5PM. Finally, here is a Review of the film by the Rotton Tomatoes website: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/world-war-z/#newsletter

A really good version of the book - impressed, even if it wasn't quite "28 Days Later" or "Dawn of the Dead". Was great to meet everyone - thanks to my regulars for coming out again, and it was nice to meet the new folks. As always, a great group to spend an evening with.

I am sorry to see you had problems getting your ticket refunded, as others were able to do. You should have fun with the smaller group going to Cineworld, they are friendly movie fans too! Still, to answer your question for everyone else - yeah, we always meet up again after the movie to go for a drink or dinner.

Strange that they wont refund your ticket. I got a refund yesterday. I intially wanted to reschedule for another day in the same cinema, but I was told I would have to get a refund first and then rebook for another day/time etc. Now I wont be going to cineworld anyway, but I was still able to get a refund.

I also spoke to them. I was told yes you can have a refund if you're then going to buy another ticket for another film at the same or another Cineworld cinema. Sadly, no refunds just because the venue of a meetup group has moved to a different cinema altogether ;-). It also says in their FAQs that they have a no refund policy.

That's good, looks like there are two good options for folks to see the movie, hope everyone has a good day. As a massive fan of the book I am really curious to see how they turn it into a film. PS. As you are all into films.... did you know that the book is written by Mel Brooks' son Max!

Jees all this to save a few bucks! Not saving the Cineworld members anything tho is it? A short sighted move.

Short-sighted Shirley is to not take the entire group's view into account... they were promised a cheaper film this time out, and 4 Pounds actually matter to some people. I am trying to be fair to everyone, not just a few. You have plenty of options where to watch the film.

Ok, guys... I did some checking and it appears that Cineworld does in fact give refunds. If you bought by card, you can get a refund from then within 3-5 days, and you can still buy a ticket to come see the film with the group at VUE Islington. The telephone number you call for Customer Services to get your refund at Cineworld is[masked] 7747. The Web Link for Cineworld Customer Services follows here: https://www.cineworld.co.uk/contact Thanks to everyone for your RSVP, and sorry it got mucked up a bit... but there were still plenty of tickets when I went online at the VUE Islington website a minute ago to buy my ticket: http://www.myvue.com/latest-movies/info/cinema/islington/film/world-war-z Look forward to seeing everyone. For those who end up at the Cineworld, you are more than welcome to come out for my next event. Have a good Wednesday night.

I've hosted events for up to 500 people Brett so I'm well aware of the effort it takes. And it makes no difference whether you're getting paid or not. In this instance you've made allowances & changed things just for a few people who didn't want to watch a 3D movie and all for the sake of saving £2.52. The right thing to do here, less than 4 days before the event, would have been to leave things as they were, apologised and made sure you got it right next time.

Brett this is a shambles. Those of us who already booked tickets in good faith for Cineworld may not get a refund, and I'm certainly not going to buy another ticket before I know I'll get my money back. It's not actually that much cheaper anyway (I paid £14.32 with Cineworld Unlimited), but besides that it's pretty poor to change the venue at this stage. This would have been my first meetup with this group. Not a great start.

Pearlie - you need to try and host an event for once before being so critical. We do the best we can for people we do not know, for a "job" we do not get paid for. Please understand that it was an honest mistake - but it happens. Event organizers know this. I really enjoy hosting events, and meeting everyone, but sometimes you are left to feel totally unappreciated for all the effort and time and research we - and I in particular - have always tried to show. Have you read my event profile - it was developed over the course of weeks involving trips to London at my expense (I now live in Cambridge after having moved from London)... I did not intend to have to change locations, but it happens. Hosting events for large groups like this is not easy.

P.S. The 2D ticket at VUE Islington is 11 Pounds 80, certainly less than the 14.32 you paid at Cineworld. I make mistakes, but usually my research these events is spot on. Thanks anyway.

Hi there Laurent... you do remember my hosting The Hobbit at the O2 in North Greenwich, right? When I did there were complains about that too, since most people seemed to prefer north of the river. We can't please everyone, just trying to do the best we can... for a job we don't get paid for. VUE Islington is central and cheap, and that's why it was chosen - instead of the alternative at Trocadero, which was four Pounds more expensive. Please take this into account before casting stones for an event you are not hosting.

Thanks, Moira -I appreciate the tip. I didn't pay close enough attention (!). As I had previously promised a cheaper event this time out, I have decided to change location to VUE Islington (1330 Showtime in 2D) - we can eat at a nice Mexican restaurant (Desperados) nearby on Upper Street. If anyone has already purchased your ticket at Cineworld, please return that one and buy instead for VUE Islington. My apologies for the oversight - and look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday in Angel.

Fayola - I am sorry for the confusion. I didn't notice that the film at Cineworld was 3D (and thus more expensive than I had promised everyone). I changed the film - see above - to 1330 (meeting time 1300) at VUE Islington (Angel Tube station), still this coming Saturday the 22nd. I am sure that Cineworld will refund your ticket there. Please use the Web Link to VUE Islington above and buy your ticket there. Have a great week!
