Second chance to see... Stoker

A second chance to see Park Chan-Wook's twisted drama 'Stoker', about the odd love triangle between a girl, her mother and uncle after the death of the father. This is the Oldboy and I'm a Cyborg director's first English language film, with Mia Wasikowska and Nicole Kidman.

We've seen this as an Orange Wednesday meet with the group but basically as I want to see it I've put it up for this Sunday as well, where it's showing at the Cineworld Haymarket at 6.30. So we'll meet in the bar area in the cinema from 6. It's a Sunday so probably just a quick drink in the Captain's Cabin round the corner after.

Hope to see you there!

I was a little confused by her. I thought maybe she was always unfriendly and she doesn’t like people. Though, perhaps it’s more that the other school girls didn’t want her to join in their group? In other ways, I could empathize with her instincts; self-preservation, forward planning, family loyalty. But it didn’t make sense that she murdered a policeman to escape being investigated for murder. You would think someone would notice that there’s one less policeman than there was yesterday. What is she going to do when a second policeman comes to investigate? Kill him as well?

They didn't really bother about the forensics. All they wanted was to show a stylish murder with beautiful scenery and nice music. Climax was of little consequence to entire film.

What was Mia's real motivation in killing her uncle? Was it to protect her mother, to revenge her dad's killer or to satisfy her psychopath personality? She appeared to be enjoying her mom being seduced and tortured, just as she enjoyed when her uncle killed the boy who was trying to rape her. To me, she just wanted to feel the same pleasure and excitement she felt with the other deaths.

For me to be invested in character there has to be sympathy, something likeable - not the case in any of these! Am still haunted by Mia W's xcellent portrayal of a budding psychopath, deeply troubled by her bizarre instincts, then fully growing into them. . . brhhh!

The movie was so so. Pretentiousness disguised as a Hitchcock flick.

Maybe I sound a bit harsh. Okay, I do think there was a lot going on in terms of how someone gets to that psychological state, and from an intellectual level that was pretty interesting, but from the point of view of the characters...I wasn't invested in any of the characters especially India. I didn't get her motivations, or any attachment she had to her father.

Fair point your right they could have done alot more with the characters I wasn't invested in any of them either.

Interesting in parts and gory, but agree a tad pretentious. Nice to meet others after and thanks Gabriel for still doing this gig!
