Oscar Grant (Michael B Jordan) wakes up on December 31st 2008 and decides to make an early start on his New Year's Resolutions. He's determined to be a better son, boyfriend and father but while he puts his best foot forward he soon comes to realise that change doesn't come easily... and a day that starts with good intentions ends with the entire nation knowing his name.
Based on a true story Fruitvale Station won both the 2013 Grand Jury prize and Audience Award at the Sundance Film festival, as well as Best First Film in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes. Needless to say it has been very well received, with Jordan's performance in particular being singled out for praise. Also starring Octavia Spencer and including real (and very challenging) footage of what happened with Oscar Grant that day the film made its UK debut at Sundance London earlier this year.
It's fair to say the movie isn't a fluff piece but I'm deliberately avoiding details of the real story for those who'd rather not know (though apparently the film starts by making clear how it ends). I've been hearing good things since the US release last year and now it's finally come to us I intend in getting to it opening weekend.
So now the 'survey' has been completed we'll definitely be going to the Cineworld in Haymarket for the 7pm showing this Saturday. The vote was very close so I actually feel a bit bad but in the end the majority did prefer the later showtime. I'm really sorry if that means anyone now can't make it but hopefully we'll get to see you again at another event... If you decide to attend the earlier showing anyway and would like to say hi we'll be in the bar area of the Cineworld itself from about 6.15pm and it would be lovely to see you, we'll be leaving the bar at about 6.50pm as seating isn't designated.
You can book tickets here. You'll get a 10% discount if you're signed in (which is free).
Those who have RSVP'd will receive full details the night before the meet.
