Junn (Pei-pei Chang) is a Cambodian Chinese woman living in London who nonetheless mostly only speaks Mandarin. When her son dies unexpectedly she finds herself trying to understand the man he was, something that becomes more complicated when his boyfriend (Ben Whishaw) arrives. Despite having no shared language but grief they work through their pain together, sharing the memories of the man they both loved through a translator.
Exploring the way people bond in difficult circumstances and what it's like to live in an environment you can't fully engage with, Lilting is the feature film directorial debut of Hong Khaou. It won the Cinematography Award: World Cinema Dramatic at this year's Sundance and has been praised for its subtle but highly effective performances.
