Lilting

Junn (Pei-pei Chang) is a Cambodian Chinese woman living in London who nonetheless mostly only speaks Mandarin. When her son dies unexpectedly she finds herself trying to understand the man he was, something that becomes more complicated when his boyfriend (Ben Whishaw) arrives.  Despite having no shared language but grief they work through their pain together, sharing the memories of the man they both loved through a translator.

Exploring the way people bond in difficult circumstances and what it's like to live in an environment you can't fully engage with, Lilting is the feature film directorial debut of Hong Khaou.  It won the Cinematography Award: World Cinema Dramatic at this year's Sundance and has been praised for its subtle but highly effective performances.

The Barbican has, once more, proved the cheapest central venue.  You can book your tickets here.

Those who have RSVP'd will receive full meet details the evening before the event.

That's a shame. For what it's worth I believe it's cinema release was paired with a streaming release, though I'm not sure where from.

hi this will be my first event do we just turn up or book in advance but then how would we sit together? is there a get together afterwards - sorry for all the questions

      August 5

    • Michelle

Questions are fine, of course :-) Generally we let people make their own decisions about where to sit (different people's eyesight/personal preference means we would never get consensus on which area of the screen to book in) but people do sometimes choose to book near other members. FWIW I have seats E5 and 6 for myself and another member, and others might post their seat numbers when they confirm. You can book in advance or on the day though on the day you run the risk of the event selling out (which I believe has happened with today's Guardians of the Galaxy meet, though might be less likely with a more niche film like this). We'll meet up for a brief time before the movie and then hang out after, likely in the Barbican's own bar, for as long as people want to hang out. Specific details about that kind of thing will be sent out in an email before the event, most likely on Saturday night.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
