The Time to Live and the Time to Die (1985) [Chinese New Waves Season]

Considered to be director Hou Hsiao-hsien’s first masterpiece, this semi-autobiographical drama focuses on a family settling in Taiwan in 1947, coping with the shock of leaving their homeland. The film follows young Ah Xiao whose quick acclimatisation to his new country often causes conflict with his more traditional family. As the lure of life on the street pulls against plans for a brighter future, his story also becomes a vehicle for exploring Taiwanese society at a particular moment in time.

‘The direction is understated, reflective and measured … making all the more devastatingly powerful the paroxysms of agonised emotion when they are eventually allowed to ignite the screen. The film is a work of remarkable maturity, assurance and clarity’ Geoff Andrew -1001 movies to see before you die

The film is in Mandarin and Hakka with English subtitles

Tickets can be booked (here)

We will be meeting for a drink before the movie.  I have to head off to a wedding party immediately after the screening and so, unfortunately, won't be able to stay for a post-movie discussion, but attendees are obviously welcome to remain for a chat afterwards.

I will send out an e-mail with meeting details to all those who have RSVPed shortly before the event.
