Let's Continue Our Journey Into Middle Earth, with... THE HOBBIT (Part 1)!

Tolkien fans! MeetUp members!

Come on out this Christmas season to witness the continuing Tolkien Saga... with the "Prequel" to the Lord of the Rings - The HOBBIT (an unexpected Journey)!

This time, for my 2nd outing as an organizer, why don't we try a viewing at the O2 Arena in Greenwich (Cineworld). It's a fabulous place to visit full-stop if you haven't been, and has a great array of restaurants and pubs inside for before or after the movie.

Here is the website link to all the fascinating trivia and trailers for the Hobbit: http://www.thehobbit.com/index.html#content=synopsis

For our pre-movie dinner (at 5PM), we will be eating and being merry (!) at the classy but reasonably priced Thai restaurant, Thai Silk! It's inside the O2 Centre, just before you get to the Cineworld escalators. NOTE - The Movie SHOWTIME is 7PM (3D).

UPDATE (Sunday 8 December):  ONE WEEK to go!!! In regards to TICKETS, please buy ONLINE in advance of the event - do not wait until even 2 or 3 days before. FYI - I have already purchased my ticket (in my case, I did so in person at the O2 Cineworld box office). As with Skyfall, if you wait until the last minute to get a ticket, you will miss out. Please do not let that happen - this will be a FUN event (!), and I hope to see all of you there. Here is the web link for buying your Hobbit TICKETS online at Cineworld O2 Greenwich: http://www.cineworld.co.uk/whatson/5757?cinema=79&cookieLevel=1111&locale=GB&secure=false&gbLocale=true&mapApiKey=Aj8bhxskJR1S8CqbKYkL4SpvWzacmzzB2iTfZSwi-HFLHpPN6ISfu8wccbH6Rra4#cinema=79&date=advanced

What: The Hobbit (Part 1) - 3D

Where: Cineworld at the Greenwich O2 Centre

When: Pre-Movie Dinner (at Thai Silk) 5PM; Movie Showtime - 7PM

Dear All, I thought I'd post to let everyojen know abot a movie, that’s one of my facourites, as no one else seems to have seen it in London. It's abot an idenfity swtich. Here's a clip with big Bo, who's aheved more than most woman do in their lives, without even using here us legs. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCgeaNfcw-w) Later the little Bo Ski fmeets Jackie Treehorn – a directror of a well-respected publishing company - and finally learns to ski. Don't mention Bigs Bunny – she's nothing to do with it.

Glad you liked it - had concerns going in on "pacing" (stretching it out to 3 films), but overall it still worked well.

Brett said it would be OK to post this... I was discussing Cineworld's great Unlimited card with a few people tonight, which is £14.99/month (£17.99/month including their two West End cinemas) to see as many movies as you like, with free online/telephone/app bookings, up to 25% off food/drink, exclusive previews (we saw Life Of Pi 3D on Monday, at no extra cost, ten days before release) and no 3D surcharge that is usually applicable, once you have had your card for at least a year.

If you're interested, here's a code you can use to get an extra free month:

    RAF-45XZ-19EH-83XA-86JZ

Enter this code when asked to enter a promo code on the online sign-up process. Providing you complete your introductory period, we will both gain an extra month membership. Terms and conditions apply.

    • Dave N.

I've had my card since mid-2001, back when it was run by UGC Cinemas (who Cineworld bought out later on), and my record for use is 10 films in one month (during Oscars season one year, when it was £10.99/month, so it cost me £1.10 per film). I now pay the extra £3/month as their Haymarket and Shaftesbury Avenue cinemas sometimes have independent/foreign language films that aren't always on at my local Cineworld (West India Quay), and I'm sometimes nearby in the afternoons/early evenings so I can pop in for their mid-evening screenings.

Anyway, if you live near a Cineworld and go at least twice a month, I can't recommend it enough!

      December 16, 2012

    • Florian

of course, the downside is that it forces you to watch lots of films at Cineworld (i.e. mainly new Hollywood films) and you're more likely miss out on the other great cinemas in London like BFI, Prince Charles Cinema etc. ;-)

The trouble with Fatnasy Trilogies is that as they contine they decrease in quality. I asked myself do I wan to see a 2 1/2 hour film based on the first 1/3 of a 310 page book? No thanks. Hope you all enjoy it though, despite the reviews.

I'm looking forward to seeing the, prequelt, torrow, which is when you find out who the stories main characters are. There's Bilbo, who starts out thinking that outside Bag End some terrible fate awaits. Galndalf The Grey would be happy to see him go beyond Bagshot City Limits one day and have some new experences. Yes, you're right - they've softened it a lot to make it suitable for all ages.

Thanks for the great idea, Lisa! Alas, after calling The Pilot I found out they are almost completely full from Christmas party bookings... I was told we could show up and "try", but too much of a risk (and it's a bit of a hike - a mile according to Google) if we don't get seats. I will definitely try to use the Pilot next time - it looks fantastic on its website - when I bring a group to the O2.

Well... perhaps, we can find space at the Slug & Lettuce there after the film (altough it can get loud in there). Otherwise - perhaps we could get on the Tube briefly and head to West India Quays or Stratford afterward for something to eat, as an alternative.

Of course they are! We welcome everyone - both the old guard that form a very cool core for the group, and the new folks that always keep our group new and fun! There will be plenty of both new and long-term members there, and everyone is always friendly - you will have a good time.
