This is a movie about the details behind the hunt for and the killing Osama bin Laden.  Personally I am curious about the details of this, and I wonder how well it will play out in a movie. 

Showtime is 5:55PM, I will be at the theater by 5 and we will head in for seats by 5:30. 

In general, I arrive at the theater an hour before the show to start gathering people, and we head in for seats about 30 minutes before the show, so we can sit together.  This also allows us to take turns getting snacks, etc., before the previews start.

Although this is not opening weekend, there has been a lot of buzz about this movie and it has gotten rave reviews.   I STRONGLY recommend that everyone buy tickets in advance.  

If you miss the group ahead of time, come find us after.  We gather in the hallway outside of the theater we just saw the movie in, to discuss the film a bit, allow for restroom breaks and to get a head count of all those who would like to go out after for drinks and munchies.

$$$$Managing the after event is much easier if everyone brings cash, so please plan ahead if you want to go out with the group after.$$$

    I think I understand at least some of the controversy surrounding this film, regarding its factuality and, especially, with respect to its depiction of torture, and I actually went into the cinema really expecting to dislike this film. However, a short way into the film, I found much of my concern about the film's historical accuracy slipping away. Whether U.S. agents did/didn't torture people in the hunt for UBL, I thought that "Zero Dark Thirty," esp. the 1st 1/2, provided a remarkably powerful, deep, mature, thought-provoking consideration of the subject of torture in general. Beyond this, the movie had an engrossing overall story/narrative, just the right tone, rich atmospherics, and, last but not least, terrific acting, all-around, from a wonderful cast. A great piece of film-making. Socializing with group members after the movie at the Rockbottom was fun, as always. Thanks, Doreen for organizing. Again, I think you made the right call in choosing "ZDT" over "Gangster Squad."

So, if I understand correctly one concern about the film, whether anyone (like the character "Ammar"in the movie) was ACTUALLY tortured and subsequently gave up information that helped U.S agents find Osama bin Laden matters very much, because the film sends a potentially very dangerous message: that, at least sometimes, torture is effective-torture works. Am I in the right ball-park now, or am I still out in left field? (I know I'm hopelessly mixing metaphors there. ;-p LOL)

      Paul: Sure, glad to help. Yes, I think that you've both now correctly got the film's narrative and that you've given a reasonably fair outline of one of (the?) major critiques of the film.

    Thought the movie was really well done. Kept my attention through out. The discussion after the movie was interesting also. Discussing not only the controversy of using torture as a method to gather intel but also sharing how we heard about and what we felt when we heard Bin Landen was dead.

    Having seen "Zero Dark Thirty" twice this week, I MUST share what I feel is the film's most disconcerting, distracting, and perhaps illuminating revelation: John Barrowman looks a lot like Tom Cruise.

      That's not entirely a new revelation (cf. e.g. 2008's http://www.ew.com/ew/... ) though it would likely hold up better than the film's other revelations under Senate scrutiny.

      By my calculations, the Barrowman/Cruise revelation stetches back to 2002, with the so-bad-it's-good classic "Shark Attack 3: Megalodon", wherein Barrowman unveils his master plan to become budget Tom-Cruise-cum-Mark-Harmon (cf. e.g. Bobby Costanzo's early 90's run at the budget Danny DeVito market) :P

    I see there are some people in the group who seemed a little anxious about the movie outing.

    First, there WILL be an event at the AMC Lowes this weekend. We are going to see the 5:55PM show. Be aware that this movie is 2hrs 37minutes long...plus previews. So I selected an earlier show so we can still have an after event.

    Second, the AMC Lowes only pre-releases a few moive times prior to the Wednesday before the weekend, usually for newer movies, and even then not all the available times are listed. Occasionally when a huge new movie is opening, they will offer tickets in advance and if that happens I will notify the group.

    Third, though this is not the opening weekend for this film. There has been rave reviews and lots of buzz so I still STRONGLY advise you to go to Fandango and buy your tickets ahead of time.
