Jakob Beer is a child who witnesses his family's slaughter at the hands of the Nazis. Athos Roussos, a Greek archaeologist, finds him and smuggles him out of Poland to Greece. After the war, they emigrate to Canada where Jakob eventually becomes a poet and translator. Ben, the young son of Holocaust survivors, learns of Jakob's past when he finds his diaries.
