The Little Theater Movie and Talk Meetup Group Monthly Meetup

  • Sep 7, 2013 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Welcome to our group. We see movies at the Little Theatre on East Ave. in Rochester on the first Saturday of the month. We meet at 6:00 - 6:15 near the cafe behind the ticket booth for cinemas 2-5. I usually send out suggested movies from among the 6:30 to 7ish showings. This allows us to get out of the theater at about the same time for talk. Pair up with people for a movie or join the general group. We agree to meet afterwards at a near by restaurant, Acanthus Cafe on East Ave (2 block walk from the cinema) for conversation about the movie, life, or toward wherever the conversation leads.

Join us to meet new people, see an interesting movie, and have a nice night out with good conversation, connection and companionship. All are welcome.

Hello all,

Another Summer done, I am looking forward to the Fall, movie season.  "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" (Rated R, 96 min., in Theater 4 @ 7:15pm) is a Bonnie & Clyde type movie starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Marra as a couple struggling with love, a new baby, and a 25 year prison sentence for him in 1970s Texas.  Also there are shining bit roles for Keith Carradine and Ben Foster.  Check out the review below:

Peter Rainer's review of "Ain't Them Bodies Saints"

http://www.csmonitor.com/The-Culture/Movies/2013/0816/The-strength-of-Ain-t-Them-Bodies-Saints-lies-with-its-actors

"The Spectacular Now" (Rated R, 95 min., in Theater 1 @ 7pm) is a coming of age story about Sutter Keely, a high school senior, a charmer who looks forward to devouring the world on his plate, who by accident falls in love with a "nice girl."  Sutter lives in the now and Aimee dreams of the future.  There is so much more to this movie in Roger Ebert's review, one of the last he wrote before passing away.  It is one of Ebert's most touching reviews I have read.  I miss his depth and personal connection in a movie review.  Amazing review.  Check it out below:

And, of course, Woody Allen with "Blue Jasmine" (Rated PG-13, 98 min., in Theater 2 @ 6:40pm).  Cate Blanchett stars as a rich society woman whose society bubble burst with the incarceration and suicide of her husband.  She is forced to live with her blue-collar sister and resents everything.  It is a psychological tragedy of the Cate Blanchette character simultaneously living with and lying to herself.  Here is a review by Ty Burr of the Boston Globe

Lee Daniels' The Butler (PG-13, 132 min., Theater 3 @ 6:30pm) is the story of a White House butler who served seven American presidents over three decades.  It stars Forest Whitaker, Liev Schreiber, John Cusak as Richard Nixon, Jane Fonda as Nancy Reagan, and Oprah Winfrey.  Read a mixed review below.

Meet between the ticket booth for theaters 2-5 and the cafe.  Look for the group and ask: "Is this the movie group?"  Talk with others and choose your movie.  After your movie, walk over to Ancanthus Cafe on East Ave for food, drink and discussion at the tables.  Hope to see you there.

Great turnout, many new people were welcomed. I saw "The Spectacular Now" and was greatly moved by the story. It showed the inside of falling in love, not the facade. It also shows how someone can train themselves not to love by the way they portray themselves. Beautiful to see this character realize this and open themselves to love at the tender age of just after high school. Makes me think of self and others that hold back love for much of our lives. Always hope, and much work. Great acting by "Amy" and "Sutter." Beautifully real story, the people watching with me were mostly moved. Good time at Ancanthus. Interesting how people connect the movie to their lives in their discussions. Interesting and fun.

I had written this one off as a teen rom-com but after reading your review I want to see it. Good sell! Missed the Meetup - dinner guest arrived an hour late screwing everything up.

Enjoyed seeing The Butler. The movie was excellently done and portrayed the turbulent times.

Closed Circuit. I was in the mood for a straight-up thriller and this movie was that.
Good conversation with Luisa, Paula and Nancy afterwards.
    Acanthus was excellent tonight.

sorry, I'm probably going to have to bow out due to weather--I've been a bit run down this week, and biking in the rain, and possibly thunderstorms later, wouldn't be wise. Plus I'd be damp and miserable in the air conditioned theater...y'all don't need to experience me grumpy. :)

I believe that "Closed Circuit" is playing also, but truth be told, the new format for movie showings on the 7th left me a bit puzzled.

Larry, Closed Circuit is playing. But from the reviews I read, it looks like a mess. So I didn't include it in my recommendations. I don't include all the movies in the recommendation, just the ones I think would be good for the majority of members.

I have heard great things about Blue Jasmine. So disappointed that the Salinger documentary is not showing. Anybody know if and when it is coming?
