Oscar-Nominated Foreign Film: The Great Beauty (Italy/France, 2013)

Best Foreign Language Film category nomination for the Oscars.

The Great Beauty (2013)

This writeup comes from the Dryden Theater webpage:

(La grande bellezza, Paolo Sorrentino, Italy/France 2013, 142 min., Italian w/ subtitles, 35mm)

Rochester Premiere! Journalist Jep Gambardella (the dazzling Toni Servillo, Il divo and Gomorrah) has charmed and seduced his way through the lavish nightlife of Rome for decades. Since the legendary success of his one and only novel, he has been a permanent fixture in the city’s literary and social circles, but when his sixty-fifth birthday coincides with a shock from the past, Jep finds himself unexpectedly taking stock of his life, turning his cutting wit on himself and his contemporaries, and looking past the extravagant nightclubs, parties, and cafés to find Rome in all its glory: a timeless landscape of absurd, exquisite beauty.

Screening:

Sunday, January 26 at 5 p.m. at the Dryden Theater, The George Eastman House

After we can go over to Starry Nites on University and Atlantic for drinks, desserts and discussion.  They are open until 9 on Sundays.

I am still thinking about "The Great Beauty" and decided to revisit "La Dolce Vita" by Federico Fellini since "The Great ..." is supposed to be a re-making of Fellini's work. Maybe after that, I'll be more generous in my opinion toward "The Great Beauty".

Luisa and I did some talking about 2014 Oscar Best Foreign Language Film. Here is a short article:

    http://www.indiewire.com/article/2014-oscar-predictions-best-foreign-language-film

Of all the foreign language films that I saw this year, only 'La Grande Belleza' was nominated.

Visually beautiful movie. Lots to think about for days. Great shots of Rome. Good company and conversation. : ).

It was interesting to compare the difference between 35mm film vs digital. As Brian said, " I need to think about this movie." Some challenging thoughts on life and death -- an 'off-the-wall' movie.

Another great movie at the Dryden. 'La Grande Bellaza' was a chaotic and cacophonic smorgasborg of visual and auditory stimulation. Very beautiful scenery and photography with an amazingly varied soundtrack. For me, the contrast of the hedonistic (and meaningless) lifestyle against the purpose-filled life has been rarely portrayed like this in American cinematography. As always, the after-movie discussion both emphasized what I experienced and further explained what I missed. The Saint: "Do you know why I only eat roots?"
    Jep: "No"
The Saint: "Roots are the only thing that matters."
