The Little Theater Movie and Talk Meetup Group Monthly Meetup

  • March 2, 2013 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Welcome to our group. We see movies at the Little Theatre on East Ave. in Rochester on the first Saturday of the month. We meet at 6:00 - 6:15 near the cafe behind the ticket booth for cinemas 2-5. I usually send out suggested movies from among the 6:30 to 7ish showings. This allows us to get out of the theater at about the same time for talk. Pair up with people for a movie or join the general group. We agree to meet afterwards at a near by restaurant, Acanthus Cafe on East Ave (2 block walk from the cinema) for conversation about the movie, life, or toward wherever the conversation leads.

Join us to meet new people, see an interesting movie, and have a nice night out with good conversation, connection and companionship. All are welcome.

Well, the Oscars are done and the Little Theater is bringing some of them back.  Best Picture was won by Argo (Rated R, 120 min., at 6:20pm in Little 1 on East Ave.), a "edge of your seat" film about Americans trapped in Iran on the edge of the 1979 hostage crisis.  Here is a link of an interview from the former Canadian Ambassador to add a little color to the story.

There is also Silver Linings Playbook (Rated R, 122 min., at 7:10pm in Little 5) which won the Oscar for best actress for Jennifer Lawrence (J Law).  Nice movie, interesting conversation about what is seen as crazy in our society after a few of us saw it a month ago.

The Life of Pi (Rated PG, 127 min., at 7pm in Little 2) won Best Director Oscar for Ang Lee, is a visually beautiful film.  I haven't seen it, and may choose this one on Saturday.  Check out the review below.

There is also Quartet (Rated PG-13, 98 min., at 6:30pm at Little 3), not an Oscar winner, but a good movie according to the few people I spoke to who saw it.  Starring Maggie Smith and directed by Dustin Hoffman.  Shorter than all the other movies, and you will get out first to enjoy time at Ancanthus after.

LA Times Review of Quartet

Look for the group of people at 6pm between the cafe and ticket booth for theaters 2-5 and ask "Is this the movie group?"  After the show, head over to Ancanthus (2 block walk from

the theater) for some food, drink and conversation.

Hope to see you there.

Life of Pi was excellent -2 thumbs up. A lot of lively & enthusidastic conversation about this movie - thank you Melinda for your great perspective on many of its key 'moments'.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
