Summer Classics at the Strand - Vertigo

Once again, the Strand Theater in Clinton is hosting their Summer Movie Classics.  A different classic movie every Monday night through July and August.

James Stewart is a San Francisco detective with a fear of heights.  He is hired to investigate a friend's wife and becomes obsessed with her.  There's a mystery too, but I won't spoil it for you.  Often called Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece, Vertigo is ranked by the American Film Institute as one of the top 10 films of all time!

We'll plan to meet outside the lobby about 1/2 hour before the movie begins.  If you need to reach me, my cell phone number is[masked]-0455.

The schedule:

  • July 8 - Jaws (1975)
  • July 15 - Back to the Future (1985)
  • July 22 - Rebel Without a Cause (1955)
  • July 29 - Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988)
  • August 5 - Chariots of Fire (1981)
  • August 12 - Rain Man (1988)
  • August 19 - E.T. The Extra Terrestrial (1982)
  • August 26 - Vertigo (1958)

Oh, Lynn, that was an excellent recognition of Hitchcock as stenographer. I think Lori-Ann (or Jo-Ann) was wondering.

Vertigo was a great film as I reflected on it the next day. I wasn't spooked til the last half-hour but that doesn't really matter overall.

FYI Hitchcock was the stenographer at the inquest.

Loved the movie! But Dave's Jimmy Stewart impression made the night complete!

I will admit, too, that nodded off a few times, lol. (Note to self: cannot wake at 5 am and expect to go on for days!) And there were sections of the movie in which the Herman Miller-looking 50s furnishings had my attention much more than the story line did -- if only I had remembered those rectangular covered buttons on the back of the sofa in his apartment, I would have had mine done that way!!!

Peg and I wondered: where was Hitchcock's appearance in the movie? I missed him altogether and assume he made a cameo, yes?

The restored colors are beautiful, but I still don't really care for the story. Still, it was fun to see everyone.

Amazing how much I did not recall! And how weird to experience folks laughing during this movie!!!

The movie was even better on the big screen, and the restoration really enhanced the look and color of the film. Yes, Dave's Jimmy Stewart impressions after the movie were pretty funny..
