Downfall

I originally posted this as a double-feature. But, as Chris pointed out, both movies together at 5 hours. That's a lot of time to sit around watching movies. So we'll just do the one. I changed the time from 5:30 to 6:30 too.

Downfall is a German film about the final days of Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany.  It's based on the memoirs of Traudl Junge, who was Hitler's secretary, and a biography of a boy in the Hitler Youth.  It's in German with English subtitles, so if you don't want to read during the film, you may way to skip this one.  Bruno Ganz is so good as Hitler you'll want to reach into the screen and strangle him.  This film is the origin of the Angry Hitler videos you see subtitled on YouTube.

I think I can fit about 8 people in my living room.  I'll pull the futon out, so with that and the sofa and some extra chairs I think we can fit everyone.  Feel free to bring snacks.

Downfall, in my opinion was a very well done film. I was surprised how immersed I was into the movie. I wasn't surprised by how much I history learned.

Thanks again Dave! I enjoyed it as well. The scene with the children at the end was heart wrenching, but there you are.
I wondered a little how much people wanted to talk history or simply stick to the story line of the film. If I were to emcee that kind of movie, I may have paused it halfway through for discussion and reflection. I googled the time frame prior to the film and never realized FDR, Mussolini, and Hitler all passed way in within three weeks of each other.

I was thinking of pausing halfway through and asking if we wanted to order pizza, but I decided not to interrupt it since people were into the film.

This film brought to mind the film, One Day in September, a 1999 film chronicling the events of the 1972 Munich Olympics. This movie floored me and led me to read much more on it. Highly, highly recommended!

Dan, here's a basics link to cinema and the Third Reich -- could not remember the names of the players, but the story is unforgettable to marketing geeks like me.

Hi Anne. I'm looking forward to seeing you again. Bring whatever snacks and/or drinks you prefer. If you like it, it's likely someone else does too. Of course, you are not obligated to bring anything but yourself.

Sounds fun, but I'll be out of town, maybe some other time.

That said, two 2.5 hour movies for a double-feature is a big commitment. Good luck!

I should have checked the running times. These movies total to 5 hours together. Maybe I'll do Downfall and then Kelly's Heroes another time.

This is NO comedy...... [Downfall] ....

    July 21, 2013

    • David B.

Cheryl is right. Downfall is a drama, not a comedy. Kelly's Heroes is a comedy.

I wasn't 100%sure I was interested, but then I thought about it. I could learn from the first movie+laugh with the second. Thanks for organizing.
