Thanks Mary!  I will probably host these on various weeknights from week to week...I'll probably only do a "scheduled" one every week or every two weeks but will surely do a bunch of last-minute ones since I love my home theater!!!

Furthermore, the great thing about Meetup and smartphones etc is that these can even be totally last minute meetups.  Of course, having a set night of the week and trying to do it weekly or biweekly sounds ideal, but for example say the work day is winding down and in the mood to watch "x" movie that night.  I can post a last-second meetup for people in the area. (I live in Millbury center, corner of Main and Canal, in the big-ass renovated wool mill called "Cordis Mills").

Having a few people over for my movie watching will be a big benefit to me as well in that it will encourage me to sit through a whole movie start to finish without getting up a dozen times or checking Facebook or cooking that meal I forgot to start before the movie.

p.s. Apologies to all who are disinterested and keep getting the emails...I just wanted to toss some ideas around and gauge the interest level.  I'm sure for most folks it will depend on which night and proximity to Millbury.  Just know I will never charge money nor expect people to bring food or drinks or anything.  Feel free to bring anything you want, but I will usually try to have some type of munchies on hand

I love the idea, in fact, I had considered making a similar offer myself, but held back for the exact same reason (ie., hesitant about strangers in our home). In addition to the cost savings, another advantage of these is that we get to watch movies that aren't new releases.

I *am* allergic to cats, but I can just take some medicine beforehand. We will be traveling for a few weeks in December, so we may not be able to come out to a ton then, but when we can make it, we'd be glad to help out with snacks/drinks.

Just had a short discussion with my wife, and we would love to offer our apartment as an alternative location if folks are interested. Seating here is a bit limited as well (3-4 on couch, 1-2 seats on the side, 3 on beanbags in front), but we have a front projector system w/ ~90" screen, a pretty kick-ass sound system, with ~350 movies (~2/3 on blu-ray). Here's our current film list (all physical media, updated today), there's some decent overlap with your collection, but a stronger emphasis on foreign and independent.

If there's a ton of demand for a particular film (that hopefully we both have), we could even plan to split up and meet at both locations on the same night, watch the same movie, and if folks are interested in post-movie discussion, we could do that on the meetup mailing list or forum (or even do a post-movie Skype chat).

forgot to mention - I have a cat.  Very elderly and mellow, but in case you're allergic...

Hello gang,

I'm thinking about an idea for a winter time, cheap, cozy, hibernatory meetup for just a few people, maybe on a biweekly basis - at my apartment in Millbury. I just ordered a 60" plasma (to be delivered Dec 3) and i already have a killer sound system and literally hundreds of Blu-Rays (and a media player connected to Vudu and Amazon Instant Videos).  I watch a lot of movies and TV shows on disc as it is, so I figure I should share the wealth.  Believe me when I say that when sitting in the sweet spot on the couch the sound is better than any modern megaplex theater in terms of clarity and full surround immersion.  My couch can sit three comfortably and I can set up 3 or 4 chairs on either side, so we'd be looking at a pretty low cap...maybe 6 in case my buddy down the street wants to join in :).  One great thing about plasma vs LCD or LED is that the viewing angles are amazing.  Meaning, even if you're far to one side, the color and brightness and black levels are virtually the same as if you're sitting straight in front.   Try that w/ LCD or LED and you will be severely disappointed.

Anyway I was hesitant to propose this because after all, I would be letting possible strangers into my home.  But this seems like a pretty small and tight-knit group of movie lovers and I'm sick of hogging all the spoils of a kick-ass home theater setup in an apartment next to elderly people who's hearing sucks and who's assured me in the past that they can't hear my movies...and i play them LOUD and their bedroom is on the other side of the wall closest to my subwoofer and three main speakers.

So here's what I was thinking:  if I buy a new Blu-Ray that I'm psyched to watch ASAP or if I just get the urge to pull one off my shelf, that can be the movie of the night.  Otherwise, I actually have a spreadsheet of all of my movies that I could email to everyone and people could let me know if they're dying to watch any one in particular.  If more than one is requested we could do a vote or something.  And again, the sky's pretty much the limit because anything I don't own already can be ordered for $5 or $6 on one of the online services.  But being the OCD audio/videophile I am, I'd prefer the full monty Blu-Ray to the slightly compressed streaming versions.  You can stream 1080p and Dolby Digital+ but trust me, it's not as smooth.

Anyway, just some food for thought.  Feel free to reply here or shoot me an email at digs5446 at Gmail dot com.

Oh yeah - I'd want to do this on a weeknight, perhaps meeting between 6 and 6:30 and starting the movie no later than 7:00 (depending on how long it is).  I like to be done with my movie viewing by 9:30ish, even though my neighbors say they can't hear it.  I just start feeling bad after a certain time.

Dan

p.s. - here are a couple of my lists to give you an idea of what kind of movies i have.  The list of physical discs is outdated by about, oh...75 titles?

physical Blu-Rays owned
Blu-Ray rips on hard drive
