I added a Meetup Suggestion to watch Beasts of the Southern Wild at our place, if you're interested, please chime in and we'll get a date set up. http://www.meetup.com/movies-579/events/98935262/

PS. Also suggested Safety Last at The Hanover Theatre, a classic silent with live accompaniment: http://www.meetup.com/movies-579/events/98795542/

Strong work, Chris!  I can't beleive Ben Affleck isn't on the list for Best Director.  He did get nominated for best adapted screenplay I believe, but still.

Oscar nominees are up: http://oscar.go.com/nominees

There are 9 best picture nominees, and I've actually seen a total of… 1, and that was Django, with you guys, on Tues. So it looks like I have a lot of catch-up on before Feb 24th. (Note, underlined titles also have a director nomination, which can often be an indicator of a more serious contender, though not always)

Amour
No home release and not currently in theaters, not sure how to see it. Though, with the Oscar buzz (5 nominations), I expect that if they can, some theaters will want to show it to capitalize on that.

Argo
Still in theaters, and The Strand is doing a run until Jan 17th. Since it had an Oct 12th release, I expect this to be the last chance to see it in theaters.
Home release is Feb 19th, and Dan has a meet-up for this already scheduled. If the waitlist gets any longer though, I'll talk with Alyssa about doing an alternate screening at our place (probably on the following Thu, since she's busy Tues evenings)

Beasts of the Southern Wild
Available now on DVD/Blu-ray. I own the Blu-ray, but haven't gotten around to watching it yet, so we'd be glad to have folks over to see it.

Django Unchained
In theaters now. Since we just had a Meetup for it, I don't suggest that we schedule one, but since it was just released, I fully expect it to stay in theaters through Feb.

Les Misérables
In theaters now. We haven't had a Meetup for it. Tom Hooper didn't get a directory nomination for this, but there's still a lot of Oscar-baitiness going on.

Life of Pi
Unless it hits second run theaters, looks to me that last chance to see it before Oscars is *today*, 6:15p, at Showcase in Worcester.
Home release is after the Oscars. Dan has a Meetup for the home release, but unfortunately, wouldn't fit into Oscar Catch-up.

Lincoln
Still in theaters, there was already a Meetup for this, so I expect we won't schedule another. This may stay in theaters a little longer, especially due to Oscar nominations, but if you want to catch it before Oscars, this is your best chance.
Home release is the week after the Oscars. Dan has a Meetup for the home release.

Silver Linings Playbook
Still in theaters, there was already a Meetup for this, so I expect we won't schedule another.
Home release is Feb 12, if folks are interested enough, we could do a Meetup for this at our place.

Zero Dark Thirty
Out wide in theaters this week. Very surprised that Bigelow didn't get a director nomination for this from all the buzz we've heard. Despite that, I'd still consider this a serious contender. Alyssa and I are really excited for this one. Let's get a Meetup scheduled!

PS. Looks like The Master got snubbed, so while it's still on *my* catch-up list, I'll just wait until the eventual home release.

This is a great idea, Chris.  I'd be happy to host any of them assuming they fit in my schedule, and once we find out which ones will be re-released theatrically and which ones will be available to rent/stream.  I have a couple trips coming up but would love to participate as much as possible since I am woefully behind on my Oscar potential film viewing (haven't even seen The Master).

So, being in the middle of Oscar-bait season, and realizing that I've missed a ton of these for one reason or another, I wanted to throw out the idea of an "Oscar Catch-up Meetup Series" (which will most certainly overlap with both "Regular" meetups as well as Dan's "New Release" series).

We could do this as a series of meetups, both in houses/apartments as well as in theaters depending on availability, so we can make "informed" Oscar predictions. Perhaps with an Oscar pool for good measure, and maybe an Oscar night get together (Sunday,[masked]).

We would certainly be willing to host some movie nights at our place for this, though we wouldn't be able to do Oscar night (no cable TV subscription).

The actual movie list I'm sure will depend on which nominees are announced on[masked], as well as availability (I expect that some will be in limbo between theatrical and home release). So, that makes ~7 weeks between nominee announcements and the awards ceremony.

I'm guessing that since best picture nominations can be anywhere from 5-10, and I don't think there's are too many really clear front-runners to keep the number down, we may have our hands full just trying to catch up for Best Picture, *but* if we feel we're properly prepped there, we can always dive into the more esoteric categories like Documentary or Foreign. There may even be screenings of the shorts nominees (Alyssa and I caught a screening of the animated shorts last year in Albany).
